My main problem with that one and every other MCU movie, and most Star Wars movie as well to be honest, is that the humor is just so bad. Most, if not all, the jokes are so hammy and basic that I can't comprehend people laughing at them. The problem with MCU is that that type of humor and quick quippy dialogue is the main starting point for half the characters in the first place, so they all act and sound the same and it's grating.

getting my oil changed, and the guy checking me in complements my Luke/Vader dash figures, and says we need to talk about Rise of Skywalker before you leave. we both had similar ideas of what Skywalker means (a new order from the Jedi and ideas about old Palpy). sometimes Star Wars really does bring people together.

  4. We've been hearing about "super hero fatigue" forever and at this point they just seem like such easy "everyone will go see and like this" movies -- the closest thing we pretty much have to mandatory mass culture at this point -- even when they're just ... fine. It was three years ago we were talking about the "infinite franchise" that will still probably be going on after we're all dead.

Only if it's played by a CGI half Hugh Jackman/half Ben Affleck. With the de-aging CGI effect in all these movies, I know they can make it happen.

You know, that is why I loved Black Panter's character so much because he wasn't just another quippy dude. It's also why even though I liked Captain Marvel, I didn't care for her because quippy and sarcastic isn't a character lol. I do agree those movies seem to have mostly relied on that for character.

All the stuff about his very anti-LGBT church (Hillsong) and the pro-cop/gun stuff from a few months back.

I did not know about any of that! I had a feeling something similar was going to come up after his god speech to those kids, but damn. That sucks.

I think there’s a chance the forest planet JJ said was the beginning of the film is Batuu to line up with Galaxy’s Edge. This could be why Rise of the Resistance is being held back for now too. The concept art for the ride shown during the GE panel looks similar.

:crylaugh::crylaugh: oh fucckkk. I guess he did set the format for all the MCU after Avengers so it's true.

That type of humor, combined with how annoying I find Robert Downey Jr, really torpedoed my interest in that whole universe, even though that's not really fair.

I thought they said that Batuu was not going to be from any films so it felt like it's own thing

I mean judging by the trailer, we could realistically be on Tatooine, Yavin, and Endor lol I hope it’s not that simple but could be.

ForceCenter brought up that it might be actual Endor that the Death Star fell on and not the moon of Endor that the Ewoks are on which makes sense

I enjoy the MCU, but also admit not a single villain or character in it rivals Kylo Ren. Also scores matter to me and this is an obviously one sided

In what aspect do you mean? It really depends on what you want in a villain and how it affects the story. Baron Zemo could rival Kylo in terms of sheer craft. Thanos could manage the strength. I'm not disagreeing, I'm just interested in your thoughts.

I do realize that a year-and-a-half is simply not enough time to say whether something stacks up to a classic that has endured for almost 40 years, but I honestly think in the long run The Last Jedi will end up firmly Tier 1 with Empire.

Even as somebody who adores TLJ and considers it in my top tier of favorite movies it’s hard for me to imagine TLJ ever being generally considered a classic or something on the level of Empire or ANH. While I’m sure every movie has its haters and there will always be contrarians, I just think there’s too much negativity towards it. I even admit that TLJ is messy at points just because there’s so much going on. I also thought the comedy and dramatic aspects could’ve been balanced better as well.

As somebody who admittedly doesn’t know shit about filmmaking Id say that Empire and A New Hope are more effective overall in what they were trying to do and are both classics. TLJ I think set out to do A LOT in one movie. More than any SW movie has ever done in its themes, characters, and story and it hit on most of it but missed on a handful as well and I think that will always hold it back from being up to those others. I’m not basing this off of not just own opinion but just the general reactions I’ve gathered. It’s definitely hard because so many (like me) adore the movie and so many (not just the hardcore fanboys) dislike it so it’s really hard to decipher.

I don’t care that much though. As long as it’s a classic in my book which it is.

Then again to counter my own argument Star Wars and Empire inspired so many people so it’s hard to know the cultural impact this movie will have for a while. Also didn’t a lot of people hate Empire when it came out? Lol

just wait for people in the future to consider the prequels or whatever else classics

or any of the droves of middling YA novels turned trilogies
