Yep, I agree with all of this. Sometimes I want to just turn my brain off and have a good time or join in on hero worship kind of stuff, too! But with Star Wars, it's been much more rewarding to be challenged on those fronts.

I didn't mind Luke at all in TLJ, I thought all his stuff was great.

I think a lot of people remembered the character from the original trilogy who always did the courageous thing and risked it all for his friends, even going against the wishes of Yoda because his friends needed help. I can understand how Luke in TLJ seemed like a different character from all that.

Luke’s isolation makes a lot of sense given what he did to Kylo as well. It’s one of the best parts of the movie.

everything with the Jedi Order in the prequels shows that theyre bad at being pacifists

Im sure thats the point that they fail or maybe I just dont remember the awful prequels very well

it makes really good sense that Luke has to learn about pacificism in RotJ and his journey before that is coming to grips with that concept and his fears. that comment earlier itt was really poignant.

however, when your foe is someone who threatens life in the galaxy the way the Empire/New Order does, it becomes more than a little muddy to try and reconcile the difference between “defense” and “attack” and all the other moral threads of inaction vs action

this is more concerning how the jedi’s creed fits to combat the central threat of the galaxy rather than any specific events from the films. admittedly I am not the “best” star wars fan.

  13. Sigh. Yeah. It’s really too bad that toxicity exists around this franchise these days. Pretty awful.

i kinda wonder why these movies aren’t “treated” or whatever the same way the MCU is, especially with the quality being so much higher.

It's because their quality is so much higher that they're not treated the same way. The main saga films swing for the fences and actually try to do or say something. MCU movies are softball, easy entertainment (boring) romps for the masses.

you don’t think star wars is made for the masses? 7 and 8 are two of the top 10 grossing films ever haha. even last jedi, which did more than a lot of these movies, had the dumb casino stuff to check off boxes for kids. the movies themselves aren’t that different than the MCU, yet public perception is a bit more lukewarm for this trilogy for some reason. it’s weird.

I think they made a ton of money because they're Star Wars movies, but nearly everything else about them, especially TLJ, aren't typical blockbuster popcorn fodder like the MCU movies are.

I get that they're intended for the masses but I think it's pretty clear which movies are trying to do something more versus which movies are as bland and just the same ol' over and over again.

  19. It’s telling that the MCU movies that the internet/people have “problems” with aren’t about story but about representation or the actors involved. You get less “Brie Larson ruined the MCU” I guess when there will be a billion other Marvel movies out every year, and so there’s less chance for that narrative to stick. TLJ was massively popular and successful, (as was Cap Marvel) but the narrative has been the opposite without anything else coming out immediately after. If it was three years until Endgame, maybe that would be different.

    Just a hunch.

Oh, I was ignoring the racist/sexist shit "criticism" in my posts. I was focusing more on criticism that I disagree with but could be seen as legit. Star Wars are held to a higher standard and face more criticism because they're better movies than MCU.

yeah i think this is kind of what i was getting at.

  22. J.J. had told me and then I read the script, and then it was sort of shifting. The ending was always pretty similar, and then I was told there was a new, I guess, a slightly different beat added that I was told, which was awesome. Because it’s nice to be told a thing, and then you can experience it with the filmmaker. But also, we don’t always know how it’s going to turn out. We did the thing on this side of the camera, but we don’t know how it’s going to turn out. So I’m as excited to see it as everyone else.

I don't ever consider that when I talk about these movies. People of all works of life enjoy these movies and most don't care about any of that. These movies make a billion dollars, which doesn't happen if people don't go back for repeat viewings. Instead of giving the vocal minority oxygen, I'd rather just ignore it and let them scream into the ether.

Yeah, totally. I'm the same way. They're such a tiny tiny tiny SPECK of the whole that's it's just not worth addressing.
