The backlash to Luke’s arc in The Last Jedi is so fascinating to me because I remember sitting in the theater seeing this old, cynical, weathered, heartbreaking iteration of Luke and thinking “Oh god, I love this.”

I had no idea what was coming.

People can get too hung up on the Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey isn’t actually inherently about anything, Campbell used it as an identifier of archetypical storytelling. Lucas used it as a template, but it’s not what Star Wars, the Odyessy, or any narrative that the Hero’s Journey can be applied to, is actually about.

I had the exact same experience. I LOVED it. I was here for Broken Luke, and was even more ready for redemptive passively peaceful luke at the end. I honestly was enthralled with Luke and Kylo/Rey. That was the movie to me.

Speaking of Primanti Bros, I finally had it for the first time when I was in Fort Lauderdale recently. Soooo good. And it was open 24 hours so we stopped there for pizza almost every night of our trip after drinking

More importantly Luke being so broken, facing his dark side, and going through the most adversity he possibly could face (which was Rians self proclaimed goal for every main character) made his arc back to heroic legend Luke saving the rebellion once again in a pacifist, yet still totally bad-ass way the most rewarding it could have possibly have been.

I get why people wanted to see him use his superpowers to take down Star destroyers and AT-M6’s and use his green lightsaber to save the day, but thats never been what Luke’s all about. It would’ve been cool but that would be the Michael Bay version of Luke. I don’t want that Luke

God I love TLJ so much and I can't believe a Star Wars movie like this exists. Will absolutely watch again this week lol

As far as Luke's involvement in TROS, I'm hoping for more of a force ghost Yoda scene like in TLJ but for him to not be personally responsible for doing actions that lead to its' conclusion. I want the story to be as focused on Kylo and Rey as possible while giving nods to things of the past but not letting them be as important to what is going on now.

I feel like Yoda’s scene in TLJ was a good way to revisit the character one last time. He should be left alone now.

Don’t think that’s what he meant. I think he just means helping guide Rey like Yoda did for luke

"Left alone" is a good way to put it. He went into exile and was adamant about not leaving the island or helping, does one final gesture and then can now really be like "ok srsly, leave me be" haha

I could even see him being like "I can't help you anymore, the Jedi are no more" or something like that.

You're both kind of right. I would like a combination of Luke letting them become what they're becoming now that the Jedi is gone, but he could drop some words of wisdom at one point and fade away.

It would be funny for his only appearance is his force ghost hunched over a workbench of some kind trying to fix some power converters he finally got from the Tosche Station now that he has all the free time in the world to do whatever he wants.

I honestly loved what they did with him in The Last Jedi where he had one final shining moment to help out, but the movie wasn't completely about him. Like, "Okay, I helped. NOW it's definitely time for the new generation to handle things..."

And not even with Rey but they reaffirmed his own legacy in the SW universe with the kids at Canto re-enacting the Crait scene and him inspiring broom kid (and countless other Jedis)

That’s like the most inspirational and hero-esque thing Rian could have done for the character and all some fans see is Kylos perspective and that scene in the hut and think nope my Luke wouldn’t do that.

Exactly. And I know it's been talked about to death, but one of my favorite aspects of Luke's personality from TLJ is how his comments about the Jedi actually kind of reconciled the prequels a little bit. First we thought the Jedi were these super wise and awesome beings and then they turned out to be a bunch of egotistical idiots in the prequels. I feel like we all got soured on them after that, so I don't understand why people were so against Luke being kind of jaded. I thought it made a lot of sense and his ending was perfect.

I think people were mad at Luke not being human because he's always been a hero to them since they were 10 yeras old and didn't want to watch Star Wars as anything other than an escape from real life. And I totally understand that viewpoint.

True. I definitely understand it from a visceral aspect. Sometimes despite any logic you can’t help but feel a certain way and if they don’t like it they don’t like it. And Luke dying adds to that dissonance. I would never argue somebody should feel a certain way. My issues are more when fans say Luke would never have that brief instinctual moment to kill Ben.

And a lot of those same fans are the ones wanting him to see him show his immense power with the Force, ignite his green saber, and destroy the First Order with ease.

With everything that was going on in The Force Awakens and the 30 year gap between RotJ and TFA, it wouldn't have made sense for Luke to still be the heroic character we all knew and loved. Him disappearing should've been a huge in clue that we weren't going to be seeing the same Luke. Him being broken, bitter, and tired is exactly what he should be.
