Didn't credit JJ at all for Star Wars popularity, that's just silly. My point was that the new life breathed into the story and film is a good chunk due to him. Star Wars was still popular, but it had taken quite a few years out of the mainstream light. Also, if TFA had been rushed and wound up bombing, the franchise wouldn't be selling like it is now. Nor do I think things like Rogue One or the Han Solo would've happened.

For instance, George Lucas could've come back and done whatever with whoever, and made more prequel level movies. Sure they'd of sold tickets, but JJ managed to capture a lot of fireflies in a jar so to speak with TFA. The movie broke serious records and was generally well received. I think he's got the right touch and vision to do it again.

    Definitely agree

Just feel like lots of other people could have and want to have directed a good SW or a good TFA after Lucas relinquished the rights and we'd be in the same spot but instead we'd be copy pasting someone else's name in our convo instead of JJ. It's true. Maybe I should get my head out of the clouds though.

A lot of talk about JJ and how significant his role was or wasn't and if people are excited he is back or not.

Not thrilled for JJ but it could have been so much worse.

I'm gonna try and just look forward to episode 8 before I stress for 9.
I have a lot of faith in Rian

There isn't a single thing that Johnson has put out that I didn't enjoy. I feel like there's no way this doesn't end up being anything less than good.

Peter Sciretta from Slashfilm said all the people he's talked to said the film is very good, but also going to be very divisive amongst Star Wars fans.

Ha I was just listening to that podcast too! Yeah, his comments made me pause briefly but I'm ready for what Johnson will show us.

i have a feeling people are not going to like Luke in the movie, and not in a bad way (acting, dialogue, etc.) just, i have a feeling his character isnt going to be what we are used to in luke, and this will be intentionally done by Rian. Like, if it's possible for us to be in a SW comfort zone, we will be taken out of it by this movie.

Honestly, I am looking forward to a Luke that the audience may not want. We got the logical path for Luke in the books, it would be fun to see him take a different path.

Like, obviously this Luke started off on a similar path to the old EU books. And having a Solo child go bad is also similar, though done very differently. But having it go as bad as it did in the movies now is new. Seeing now Luke reacts to that will be interesting.

Yeah, like, both Geoff Johns and Kevin Feige worked under Donner and are heavily inspired by their time with him. Christopher Nolan and Patty Jenkins cite his Superman as an influence, too. And, his wife, Lauren Shuler Donner, is a producer on all the X-Men films.

So, yeah, that's basically 100% of the modern comic book film industry that was birthed out of Donner's Superman, and said comic book films have influenced the rest of Hollywood a ton, too, lol.

  17. Yeah, if Luke has become some sort of asshole, I think Rey would be totally let down since she idolized him, and the feelings she's feeling on screen would most likely also be felt in the audience because fans have idolized him forever too. That would be pretty interesting and very effective, I think.

what if he acts like Yoda in Empire. gets spooked by a flash light and hits things with a cane

Reasonable feeling considering Mark Hamill himself said he "fundamentally disagrees" with everything Rian chose to do for Luke.

Which is a worrying sign for me personally, especially as I feel similar to him in the Force Awakens criticism.

Wish they gave him some creative control over Luke.

  20. Playing an actor doesn't automatically translate to "knows everything that's right" about a character. Giving them creative control 30 years later because they played them is way too much.

feels way unlikely that Mark Hamill could be trusted with anything like that lol

Also I thought he made those statements a long time ago and has since clarified what he meant was way less severe or perhaps even he was misquoted. I don't remember exactly but it was something.

I just hope this movie gives me what I don't know I want in a Star Wars movie, if that makes sense.

didn't Harrison Ford want Han Solo killed off after Empire? Something about him not seeing what more they could do with his character.

Yes. He famously thought he should be dead in Jedi when he was "rescued" from Jabba. Or something like that. It's been a minute since over read about it. But Ford and Kasdan both wanted Han dead.

Hence why he agreed to come back for TFA
