Not surprised. I think on such short notice it was gonna be someone they had in house and trusted. I loved TFA so I can't complain.

Not surprised either ha ... everyone else I was interested seems too busy atm (Jenkins and WW, Coogler and Black Panther, Duvernay and AWIT). I really enjoy TFA so I'm hoping this is a good send off.

TFA was great, but I think I would prefer someone else writing.

What's wrong with JJ? He killed it with Episode 7 - very much excited to have him coming back

Well I think most have been expecting the second installment of the trilogy to be the most exciting given all the variables.

Hopefully what Johnson does with TLJ will inspire him to be a little less nostalgic and a bit more original. But I am totally down for this. I loved TFA.

I'm stoked for JJ to come back. I think with Rian developing the characters more and putting the pieces in place, JJ can stick the landing.

He's gonna make a movie a lot of people are gonna like. He's low floor, low ceiling.

Is there any reason Lawrence kasdan isn't involved with episode ix? Would feel a lot better about the story and screenplay if he were, with JJ Abrams returning.

Prettt much. They just weren't gonna bring in another outside vision this late in the game. I was really hoping it was RJ, but maybe JJ just really wanted it? And I'm sure his pull is sizable.

I just hope JJ decides to take a few more risks this time around.

Yea, I guess with Johnson (hopefully) branching the story away from nostalgia, JJ can come up with something a little more original. TFA was great, so this is a good move.

He just doesn't really have a voice imo.

We dont know how much that's gonna matter of course.

He can point some cameras really well though. TFA was really pretty

The people who can't handle the similar plot points to a New Hope are going to be the most vocal opponents to this. Most of those people overlook what new and intriguing character work JJ did because of it.

Like, I get where they're coming from, but they generally overlook a lot because they hold that view I have found. They focus on those bigger plot points and disregard the smaller moments that truly make TFA shine.

And I agree having the same plot points was the weaker aspect of the film, but it was done effectively and they did some great stuff within them. And being the first first SW movie in over a decade, it made sense to make essentially a soft reboot sequel. But I'll be way less forgiving if they do the same with TLJ and 9. TLJ is promised to be different and it does look mostly different. We shall see.

I feel like JJ made TFA very intentionally similar to the first. Hopefully RJ will make something different and give him some interesting material to work off of, and I think JJ can make something really great.

I only think one JJ Abrams movie is any good. But he's very good at texture and surface: casting and pretty action and fun. So he's fine for Star Wars. Just not for me.
