Ava DuVernay. She already has the relationship with Disney (Wrinkle in Time), and she helped JJ Abrams figure out a scene in The Force Awakens. It'd be a pretty good fit.

I figured you knew, but he did so incredibly little before getting canned you may have forgotten haha

Just get Johnson for two in a row. That's how much faith I have in him, I'd be fine with him doing both.

Ava Duvernay, Ryan Coogler, Patty Jenkins, Michelle Maclaren, Karyn Kusama, the Wachowskis, Antoine Fuqua, and Justin Lin are serviceable to great filmmakers. I doubt any are realistic options. Some have more distinct visions than I think Disney or Lucasfilm want but, and I know it's just a trailer, the Last Jedi looks uniquely beautiful and I trust in Rian Johnson. I'd absolutely eat up a Wachowski Star Wars film but can't see it happening, so I'll take DuVernay or Maclaren, either would be great, I think Jenkins would be a great choice for telling Rey's story with an optimistic and hopeful female perspective, and Justin Lin and Antoine Fuqua aren't the best filmmakers on the list but I'm sure they'd be fine at coloring within the Disney/Lucasfilm lines while also being vibrant action directors with personality. I typed Michelle MacLaren as Michelle Monoghan throughout this post and am glad I proofread.

  10. Ava DuVernay would be a cool choice. They'll probably get someone like Chris McQuarrie or Jon Watts, or maybe Justin Lin or F. Gary Gray.

Or go real arthouse and abstract. Something way out of left field. Gimme Malick. Reichardt. Lynne Ramsay. Dee Rees. David Lyyyyyyyyyynch. Just pull the rug out from under everyone, fuck it, make a hypnotically beautiful and weird and challenging Star Wars movie. Harmony Korine. Jonathan Glazer. Or just a Star Wars movie that's human and grounded and takes place in the Star Wars universe but it's about a girl or guy who has a crush on another girl or guy and works a tough but civilian Star Wars job and tries to make ends meet and deal with life's ups and downs while they have long philosophical conversations with their friends. Star Wars by Barry Jenkins or Richard Linklater.

At this point they'd be making movies just for me though.

  14. ^Lot of those would be cool, but Fast & Furious directors keep coming to my mind as more likely haha.

As cool as this would be, Lord and Miller getting fired pretty much confirms nothing like that will ever happen soon

Why would you want to waste their time making a Star Wars movie, especially since it has been obvious that it is a wholly commercial product and the producers will not allow creative decisions outside of their plan?

Lin somehow did okay with Trek, but keep him away from Star Wars.

  19. That movie is an abomination and I'm still mad at how bad it is. (Tried re-watching it again a few weeks ago and couldn't make it half way.)

To be honest, that was the one scene in the movie that I actually enjoyed because it was so hilariously, audaciously bad and over the top haha. The rest just put me to sleep. Like, actually, I dosed off a bunch during that movie.
