Pretty dull images, minus the guards. I really hope they allow the film to get 'weird'. I haven't seen it, but it's a shame how Valerian aesthetically looks much more like a Sci-Fi film than Force Awakens did. I want to see more creatures, more worlds, more lore, and a fuckton more of creativity; not just the same bs we've seen before in Star Wars.

Star Wars is not really sci-Fi. Your expectations are misplaced.

Which is why I wish they would have left it in the past.

The prophecy has never been clear and who it refers to has never been officially stated.

When it is talked about in the prequels it is said differently and therefore seems inconclusive of a real interpretation. The prequels have the characters very much believe Anakin is the chosen one.

In Rebels, we recently saw that Obiwan has changed his view and sees Luke has the chosen one. What Luke accomplishes in ROTJ, it appears he does bring about the fulfillment of the prophecy, maybe.

    Now this....

Star Wars just isn't what he wants. He is bringing some weird expectations to it. I guarantee he will be bummed by TLJ.

No wonder you have these weird expectations for Star Wars.

Yeah, maybe I should use the term Lucas uses, "space opera".

That would probably set up more appropriate expectations. But that's not the only term I would use. Though they are certainly not sci-Fi.

'Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary battles, as well as chivalric romance, and often risk-taking.'
    Space opera - Wikipedia

It's still a sub-genre of sci-Fi. Regardless, pretty much everyone will call Star Wars 'sci-Fi' (or at least 'Fantasy' or 'Space Adventure'). What genre seperates it from a film like Valerian anyways? The very essence of it being in a fictional universe that explores an infinite depth of space means that my expectations of more surreal beings/locations are more than reasonable... and hopefully not just 'cute' little side-kick alien/robot characters created solely for merchandising profits.

Space adventure is vastly different from sci Fi. The focus and purpose of those genres are vastly different. Fantasy is different than sci Fi as well.

While there can be overlap in genres, sci Fi does not fit with Star Wars. We have 8 movies showing us that is not what they are interested in doing.

To be fair, these are just shots of the characters we know for a magazine. I'm sure there will be more weird/alien things, just look at the behind the scenes video at the Canto Bight Casino. That stuff just doesn't sell magazines to the general population waiting to checkout at Walmart.

    Science Fiction is defined as:
"fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets."
    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=d...sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#dobs=science fiction

Star Wars has all those elements to be defined as such. The films do occasionally explain the science behind mythical elements too, ie the force (midichlorians). It's just SW also has canon material that scopes beyond the films (tv series, books, games) that can explain the science in detail, such as how lightsabers are made/work.

Even then, again, it's completely being pedantic about semantics. I was referring to Valerian's aesthetics and mentioning 'more creatures, more worlds, more lore', etc. So it's obvious I'm referring to the fantasy elements of space films; not asking to turn Star Wars into Star Trek.

Pretty sure his expectations for Star Wars have nothing to do with fitting it into a genre and more to do with, you know, Star Wars. This whole argument just seems silly.

Not that I agree with him, but it's his own viewpoint.

  15. Star Wars has never looked like Valerian level "sci-fi" and if the movie looked like that I'd be fucking pissed.

:thumbdown:It's stupid enough when people argue about music genre's. Thought we were safe from that kind of nit-picking in movie threads.

I think it's easier to define movie genres than music genres, personally.

I don't hope this looks like Valerian.

But I want more creatures and such. My favorite part about the OT.

I think we're going to get that with TLJ if you've seen those released images from the 'upscale cantina' or the teaser trailer. Lots of cool stuff there.

One of the reasons I'm not into The Fifth Element and don't want to see Valerian is because of that look, so I really hope it doesn't happen with Star Wars.

    I doubt it will though.
