Well, no. But even if that were the case (it's not) if you can say that about TLJ you can say it double and in bold letters for the prequels.

i would love george lucas to tell us what the main themes are for the prequels and then explain how their narratives effectively grapple with them :crylaugh:

Rise easily. It’s the worst but also the most entertaining. It’s the Tommy wiseau directed Star Wars movie I’ve always wanted

George definitely thought he was telling, like, this deep af story about the corruption of institutions and the rise of a dictatorship but it came out as the cinematic equivalent of writing a thesis paper with crayons lol

They never confirmed a timeline for Rain's trilogy. Also, High Republic has been really solid thus far.

I don't think George Lucas thought he was making deep films with the prequel trilogy. I think he was aiming to make pulp adventures for children inspired by the stories he loved as a kid, while also trying to push forward special effects in filmmaking. The political elements were an added layer to the story, heavy inspired by the context that he came up in & made the original series in, but I doubt he primarily thought he was making essays on fascism.

I think it’s pretty clear that the theme of the prequels is that sand is bad

Also I always find it hilarious how fools say Rian Johnson "disrespected" or "ruined" the Jedi in TLJ when George Lucas turned them into a bunch of corrupt, hypocritical, ineffectual fools in the prequels

This rings true of the OT but less so of the prequels. The OT has a colonialism parable, but it’s much less explicit than “this is how democracy dies, with thunderous applause”

Sure, but they’re not primarily explorations of “how democracy dies.” They’re primarily movies for children inspired by stuff like Flash Gordon & John Carter, with an animated supporting character inspired by Goofy.

Are you implying these are kids movies?

Which is obviously why I, someone in my early 30s, keep falling back into talking about them.

Yeah I have more respect for the prequels than Rise as at least the prequels have old man Lucas giving us his crazy ideas. Rise is a desperate plea by a conglomerate afraid of upsetting anyone and therefore making no one happy

Rise of Skywalker is one of the only movies in existence that actually makes me angry, not only is it worse than all of the prequels but it actively sinks the quality of the ST as a whole

for some reason my reaction to Rise wasnt anger it was just total indifference once it became apparent that it wasnt any good. i sat there an watched it cold and calculated with zero joy save for reacting to some occasional unintentional funny moments. i turned it off 20 minutes before the end because it was late and i just never got back to finishing it.

but i was never mad at the movie like i was with Prometheus or TDKR for some reason. it wasnt that it didnt totally suck - somehow i just didnt care anymore.

The Dark Knight Rises absolutely does not deserve to be in the same conversation as TROS and Prometheus. It's a flawed af movie but it's way better than either of those two. Also its faults are, like, extremely overstated.
