I enjoyed the Jedi Apprentice books that came out back after Episode 1 about Obi-Wan's time as a young apprentice to Qui-Gon *shrug*

True. They did set some some false expectations in that first scene. Though I have to say, when I saw both TFA and TLJ for the first time, I never once found myself thinking "hey, where's Phasma?". It was always more like "Oh yea, that character" when she actually showed up. More Phasma could have enhanced both films slightly, but overall her lack of screen time hasn't been a detriment.

    What about poor Constable Zuvio?!?

the Doughboys podcast is about chain restaurants but they're big Star Wars nuts, and they were on the frontlines of the Zuvio shaft wagon when TFA released lol

This dude has some great threads on the movie and just Star Wars as a whole (also another solid one on Poe/Finn & Canto Bight, but I've posted enough about that). Loved his breakdown of Rey and her arc in this movie:

I can totally see the criticisms with the other parts of the film, but the core was always going to be the Rey/Luke/Kylo storyline and it was done damn near perfectly.

Idk A revenge plot just so we could get some good fights is way less compelling than what we got in my opinion. His arc really didnt complete in TFA. He was still running and I liked Rose and DJ as both of his foils that taught his character what he really wanted to be and it culminated with Phasma finally admitting hes Rebel scum. Not just a defector but rebelling against the ideology of the First Order.. Not only was it important for his character but also simply the theme of this movie.

I do agree that Phasma could have been used better though. Not just because of the armor. Because 1.thats Gwendolyn Christie and 2. in her book Delilah Dawson really made her an awesome villain because her character is the epitome of survival of the fittest. She does anything she can to survive and sacrifices a lot because of it. And that was a major theme of the Last Jedi. Not that you needed to go into her backstory in the movie but the seeds were there. Really her character is DJ but also one of the best fighters in the galaxy. Their only principle is to be on the winning side who happens to be the First Order.

Agreed with her being a misstep (but not a big one). I think Maul had more potential though for Obi-Wans arc since he killed Qui-Gon. BelatedMedia has his version of the prequels on youtube if youve never seen it which deals with Obi-Wans arc in a way I wouldve loved.

I actually dont know if I want that. I feel like I dont want him to just be same through the entire trilogy. I want some arc. I have no idea though where I want it to go though. Ive never seen his archetype become the big bad with all the power before. Im confused and I love it. So many different directions JJ could go.

  11. Maul was awesome in the Clone Wars series and Rebels, so at least there was some redemption with the character

Really? She kind of seemed like a tall, shiny Storm Trooper to me. haha. But I also don't really know anything about her past the movies.

I think all three are cool just for the mystery element they all possessed, but yeah, all were underutilized in different ways. If anything, I wish they would have drawn out her rivalry with Finn a little longer - preferably into the third film.

Although, if we're following the same logic as the continued stories of Maul and Fett, she could be this trilogy's "Thought we were dead, but we're really not!" character.

Why would anyone let toys and marketing influence their anticipation for a movie

Because they reflect, generally, what’s going on in a movie?

I loved the Last Jedi toy line. Every figure released was a legit character who had a role in the film. The same can’t be said for TFA.

Not a ton of new stuff, but a couple little fun facts are discussed here.

Wouldn't say characters are under utilized just because they look cool and don't get much screen time. With at least Boba Fett and Phasma the films never suggested they were anything more than secondary villains so I think the amount they're utilized is just fine, and keeps them a little mysterious which is great

I don’t know if anticipation is the right word because you’re most likely gonna see a movie if you’re buying/into the toys. I think it’s more expectations for it and for who/what are gonna have bigger roles. I don’t think I’m alone in seeing some of the toys before the movies and just thinking of random scenes that would be cool, like for TLJ I thought of Finn fighting the Executioners after seeing them and their axes and him undercover. It’s just going back to being kids making up our own Star Wars stories.

Glad to see the all of the cameos, especially Hamill’s kids and Edgar Wright. Kept missing them.

Btw, speaking of toys... not sure if it’s been mentioned but on Netflix the first episode of The Toys That Made Us is about Star Wars and is a fun watch! Finally got a chance to watch it last night. Oh, and I got the Rey TRU Crait exclusive and want to get the Kylo Throne Room Walmart exclusive once that arrives in stores.

"[Luke] is basically tailoring this projection to have maximum effect on Kylo," Johnson explained. "He knows that Kylo’s Achilles heel is his rage, and so that’s why he kind of makes himself look younger, the way Kylo would’ve last seen him in their confrontation at the temple, and that’s why he decided to bring Kylo’s grandfather’s lightsaber down there -- the lightsaber that Kylo screamed at Rey, ‘that’s mine, that belongs to me.’" As far as Johnson's concerned, Luke believes that Anakin's lightsaber will have a much more visceral impact on the erstwhile Ben Solo than Luke's own green blade.

But why did Kylo fall for his uncle's Force Illusion when he saw Anakin's lightsaber split in half right in front of him? Because, Johnson pointed out, he didn't actually see it.

"We as an audience saw that... The truth is, we see the lightsaber split in half -- Kylo sees a blinding flash of light and is knocked unconscious, and then Rey takes the lightsaber away before he wakes up," he said. "So if you really want to dig into it and get an explanation, you can say that he doesn’t 100 percent know what happened to the lightsaber."

We reach for the longest shadow

I kind of assumed most of that, except I thought Kylo just wasn't thinking straight about the lightsaber, blinded by rage, but this makes more sense, that he never saw it broken in the first place.

    “The greatest teacher, failure is”

So I havent stopped listening to the soundtrack since I got it a week ago. A lot of things Ill touch upon but first thought is that the only thing I was disappointed with in the score was that we didnt get something as powerful and memorable as the Imperial March.

Now I realize that the March of the Resistance is basically that for this new trilogy for me. I love it so much and one of my favorite in the SW collection. Each time it plays in the movie I get chills. Especially with them introduced with the bombers rising and then the behind shot of the skim speeders on Crait. I never get tired of it.

Also I love what John added to those sections. He took out the B section from The Force Awakens and added a really awesome horn part in "Escape" and also the new part at 4:35 of "Escape" and even more at 3:20 in "The Battle of Crait" is so sweet. I wish it was longer, but glad its there. I wouldve loved that in a light saber battle too.

Other highlights are Canto Bight (specifically at 1:28) , the drums at the end of "New Alliance",

Cant wait to find those moments in the movie. Anybody have any favorite moments from the score?

    Edit: Oh and the Fathiers.
    EditEdit: And Rose's Theme
    EditEditEdit: The whole thing basically
