Poe? The guy they originally had killed off (when him and Finn crash) until they decided to bring him back by the end of the film? How was he good? Oscar Isaac did great with the abysmally small role he had. He was hardly a developed character if he didn't appear for most of it.

BB8 was great actually, good mention.

Han could have been handled SO much better. His entire timeline was just shoehorned in with nostalgic moments. Even the idea of Rey knowing more about the Millenium Falcon than Han is ridiculous ("scavenger" is a poor excuse compared to the ex-pilot). His reconciliation with Leia was terrible. Even his demise could've had more impact had his best friends seen it.

Kylo Ren, I'll reserve judgement til I see where his character goes. He still seems underdeveloped to me, but that's supposedly the point as Snoke says he hasn't "finished his training".

I think I'm growing into someone you can trust

Feel like almost every character was well fleshed out. Worst was probably Phasma, which is a bummer due to all the hype leading up to it, but doesn't hurt the movie at all. I feel like everyone else is pretty fleshed out and I'm excited to see what they do with them in the next two movies.

Well, it had been away from him for years presumably. Have you ever went away for a weekend to find that your roommate/family rearranged your home/apartment and you have to ask them where they moved this and that?

  7. Well written characters and "developed with lots of lines and a huge role in a film" are two very different things. (I also think a character can be well developed with very little screen time -- see: Silence of the Lambs or the 8 minutes Vader gets in ANH.)

People are probably going to be disappointed with whatever Del Toro and Laura Dern's characters end up being. Mainly because they're great actor, but there's only so much screen time to go around. I wouldn't go into this film thinking they have massive roles.

Remember everyone thought Sydow was some major character?

Sure, but it's not like the Falcon had a complete do-over - the gunner position will be in the same location. I still imagine I'd know my ex-house better than any occasional visitor/inspector. So it just sounds like a cop-out excuse using the "scavenger" angle.

That just brings the other problem that Rey felt way too overpowered. I hardly buy the idea of her needing training for TLJ because she already duelled competently against the main villain after just picking up a lightsaber. I mean, you can argue he was injured from Chewie's blast, but still... this is a guy that can stop lazer bolts with the force.

But that just gives me more reason to look forward TLJ. To hopefully explain character's backgrounds better, putting my quarrels to rest and justify my slight disappointment for TFA.

  12. Page ... what ... 20-60 of TFA thread doesn't need to be re-done.

Sure. He was definitely likeable so they succeeded in that aspect, but it just didn't feel like we got enough out of his character to be truly invested in him, especially as he was advertised as one of the main three leads. Plus the whole "best pilot in the galaxy" motto has become tedious. Just another good pilot we've seen many times in Star Wars. Like how the prequels had an overabundance of lightsabers so they felt more cheap.

Can't believe people still think Rey fought competently in TFA. Watch it again.

Well, this is still a sequel to TFA and is about presenting concurrent issues some find with the first film carrying onto this one.

Yea, Poe was sold as a new major character, which is why he is so small on the poster...

Rey is great on the defense and offense:

Considering she had (presumably) picked up a light saber for the first time, that was a very competent fight.

  18. Half the time I really just don't think people actually watched the movie and what actually happened, they instead got a few talking points that have been talked about a hundred times already and don't hold up well at all.

Sound argument if you completely ignore all the panels, interviews and merchandising that had Poe alongside Finn and Rey.

    Fair...

Maybe we shouldn't base the movie off of their advertising? Cause advertising for movies is never misleading.

  21. OK, so we agree he was a well written character then, which is what I said. I didn't say anything about being invested in him or not, but I know I was — I loved his character, loved the moments with Finn, and can't wait for more Poe stories. I don't think he was advertised as one of the main leads at all. Finn, Rey, Kylo and Han were front and center of all the posters.

I see someone making a desperate retreat and only gaining the upper hand when fully giving into the force.

    1) No she's not.
    2) It's not even the first time in the movie she picked up a light saber, or the first time she's used a staff like weapon in a fight in the movie, and it's pretty well hinted at her history probably has light sabering in the past.
    3) It's definitely not a competent fight with a lightsaber. It's animalistic and raw and it's a lot of bo-staff moves with a sword, not good ... until she gives into the force and taps into something else and gains an upper hand on an injured opponent that had misjudged and underestimated Rey.

They did put him with Rey and Finn on, I want to say, an Empire magazine cover? And he was on a lot of toys, but so was Phasma... And to an extent Hux.

But I'm not gonna hold that against the movie. I agree with you, I loved Poe's stuff and found his screen time highly
    Engaging.

  25. His inclusion with 5 others I would say leads credence to him not being promoted as "the third main lead" in the movie.
