I agree so much with the last point. Star Wars isn't exactly known for making interesting character archetypes, but Kylo's struggle with being pulled to the light is a fascinating concept to me

I'm still in the camp that hopes they connect Snoke with Darth Plagueis.

I've always thought that would be so cool, but I also think it is a long shot.

Yeah it's bummed me out how little I've come to care about Star Wars in the last few years, especially considering what an absolutely huge thing it was for me as a kid to early 20something, but Rian Johnson has me real hopeful and excited. Not even necessarily about Star Wars, just to see what he's gonna do in general.

Now if they could do something about Colin Trevorrow...

I fantasize bout Disney replacing Colin with Rian after they see how good/well received TLJ is.

I'm not too worried about Colin Trevorrow since Johnson wrote the story treatment for episode IX (although, I assumed that's being altered to account for Carrie Fisher's passing). I think he's a fine director, but it's hard to judge based on two films really. Safety Not Guaranteed was great and I enjoy Jurassic World as a fun popcorn movie. His flaws seem to be more as a writer, and I don't think he has a part in the script (could be wrong though).

Yeah I'm still not excited about Trevorrow either. Can anyone think of an example where a director was let go from a project during the pre-production phase based not on the director's temperament or output but simply because the studio changed their mind?

  10. Safety Not Guaranteed was great. And I thought a lot of people loved that Jurassic World movie? I got screamed at for only thinking it was ok upon release. Definitely feels like a "third" Star Wars box office smash at least.

But, I'd also love Rian Johnson to direct all the movies.

  11. I'm just happy I lived long enough to live through what's gotta be the best time to be a Star Wars fan in ages. Great movies, great TV, good books, good comic books. One of the few good things going on.

  12. I thought Jurassic World was fun. Didn't have strong feelings about it, really. Love Safety Not Guaranteed. Not sure how I feel about Trevorrow directing IX, but I can't imagine Disney allowing it to be shit.

Jurassic World was fun to watch. Plenty of horrible moments in the script but what do you expect really. People with expectations for that franchise or general blockbuster affair are beyond perplexing. But I really would like it if someone else directed SW other than Treverrow or any of the other guys like him. It's ridiculous that such a high profile thing like Star Wars can't exclusively get renowned directors or critically enjoyed young directors (Rian Johnson) to point the cameras.

My biggest fear is that Trevorrow just won't understand the core of what it means to be a Star Wars fan. He threw everything I adore about Jurassic Park out the window with Jurassic World.

I liked Safety Not Guaranteed okay when I saw it. Jurassic World is awful, and one of the most bafflingly and bluntly sexist blockbusters I've ever seen. I'll be hopeful for episode IX, particularly if the Last Jedi is good, but there are countless directors who are far more interesting or deserving of those reigns.

I was so excited when they announced Johnson, but I do like them switching up directors. Sure, it's a little more risky, but I think the different perspectives help to keep the franchise fresh.

Hell, they should consider the Rogue One guy for 9. Lol I guess hell never work for Disney again.

He's another of Rian Johnson's type. Young, capable, artistic, actual ideas, not a studio pawn.

I was rewatching The Force Awakens and I notice the parallel between the First Order taking children (like Finn says they did to him) to train as stormtroopers and the Jedi taking younglings to the temple to train. I wonder if they'll draw more on that comparison in this movie or if it was just put in TFA without much thought of linking it.

I was thinking given our current predicament especially, I wish this new trilogy chose to depict the Empire like an American government/military instead of the 80 years passed Nazi Germany imagery. Wanna talk about the hubris of the Empire? Look no further. Would be such an amazing and meaningful little political nugget. Seems they tried to be political with the imagery in TFA in this regard and it's as hollow as something that is extremely hollow. And completely irrelevant to the current and longstanding political landscape.

It's part of Star Wars DNA already, Lucas made A New Hope/ROTJ largely Vietnam allegories. Would be cool to see the contemporary political element of Star Wars again.

Rogue One not so subtlety alluded to US wars in the middle east with Jedha (the insurgent battle scene, the empire going in to take natural resources).
