This take just seems so silly to me.

After watching a movie with Rey, Finn, and Rose as main characters.

 

this is a dumb take. why let this bother you? in a film that already heavily features minority and strong women actors, you have to complain about this?

i didn't read it as a complaint, i read it as a minor tweak to a self-described near perfect scene

 

Nah, it’s not a dumb take. Show that the future of Star Wars isn’t going white and male, again. Make it explicit that the heroes of tomorrow aren’t going to be the same heroes of yesterday: white dudes. Star Wars has been pretty decent in terms of representation, especially contrasted against something like Marvel, but the ending of a movie is a distillation of its statement. Make it crystal clear.

Plus, is saying something could have been MORE perfect really a complaint? If the force really is for everyone, which I agree is largely the thesis of the movie, then let the future of the force be shown in the hands of a person who has historically largely not been extended the focus of sci-fi/fantasy narratives.

 

I remember JJ saying they don’t cast for race but simply who auditioned best for the role. I would think/hope the situation is the same for rian casting broom kid.

i think it would have been cool if the child wasn't a human, personally. give me a cool humanoid alien that can sweep floors with the force

 

man i get that some people don't have the taste for dissecting a movie in the way Nathan does but i've never seen him say anything harmful or problematic and he just gets shit on in every thread anyways

I'm not defending anyone. I'm in the same group that would have preferred an alien creature. Posting a blanket statement like "I wish this character wasn't this race" without anything else in the comment feels like bait at face value.

 

to be fair, Star Wars is a universe LOADED with species, races, colors, and shapes. there's a lot to pull from outside of our perception of race.

 

Wasn't it confirmed that the creature in that scene was actually a young Greedo? He would have been dead long before TLJ.

 

Based on very scientific Googling of the actor's name ... it looks like it's most likely Kazakhs.
