I think the point where the Jed were wrong is forbidding attachment to people. Love is the most light-side emotion there is and by denying their Jedi that emotion, they were driving them towards the dark side and away from the light, clouding their abilities and making them weaker. The attachment to power, things, wealth, etc is what drives the dark side. I believe this is where the Jedi Order went wrong. If Anakin could clearly speak to Yoda about that which he was suffering from--that his beloved would die in child birth--then Yoda could have helped him more and perhaps Anakin never would have fallen to the dark side. I think Luke also proved the wrongness of the original Jedi when he let his love and attachment to his father prevent him from killing Vader and thus bringing him back to the light.

Very well put. I agree with your takes on luke and vader. And probably why I was wrong to lump all emotion into the dark side as Love is emotion. Love doesn’t come equal though. There is selfless love and selfish love in form of possession (guys viewing “hot chicks” as trophies). Love is a very broad term. People can love power. People can love bad things. Love is another thing only defined by our perception of it.

You can say that isn’t love but love has about 4 billion different meanings. It’s just a word. Just a symbol.

Hope is also a light side emotion too in this universe. But hope for what. Hope for the rebellion. Hope to gain power. Words are just symbols that can be interpreted differently person to person.

I get I’m getting really deep and this isn’t the thread probably to go into this. Good conversation though!

    Of course! I love it!

I think you're thinking more along the lines of the Potentium that was introduced in the NJO and then dismantled in later books. The idea was that it's not the powers or way you use your powers but your intent. Basically an ends justify the means type idea. Luke was using a Force Lightning called Electric Judgement like it wasn't no thang in those books.

    Snoke
A master of the Force and a seeker of arcane lore, Snoke seduced young Ben Solo when the Force-sensitive boy desperately needed a teacher. Snoke’s influence would prove critical when Luke Skywalkerfinally agreed to make Ben one of his new Jedi apprentices. Ben destroyed Luke’s temple, left with several of his students, and slaughtered the rest. Snoke then became his new master.

The whole use of seduced and young boy/Ben comes across super creepy. I know that’s dark side terminology, but yeah

Wouldnt it be interesting if a resistance group rose up and became the very tyrants they were vigilant against in the First Order, Sith, Empire etc. ?

I see some people freaking out about Snoke throwing Hux around through hologram but I just remembered Vader chokes Admiral Ozzel through a screen or something back in Empire

Why would there be an issue with that? That part was awesome. From Hux's face after hearing Snoke wanted to talk to him, to him trying to hide his fear with "excellent!"

Similarly, this is the same film that explicitly addresses Rose's reaction to Finn's attempt at desertion under false pretenses.

The audience is definitely expected to examine and wrestle with Luke's abandon and he is meant to be painted in shades of gray. We do not yet fully know to what end this idea will play out in Rey and Kylo's arcs, but it does and will.

Part of the rift between Rey and Kylo is the interpretation of Luke's teaching and the idea of Luke, the idol. That is a classic story beat.

Not true. I can think of a dialogue change where Rutger Haeur meets Tyrell. The version I prefer is where he calls him father instead of the other f word.

I think people are wrestling with Luke's arc in the wrong way though. It's more people stating matter of fact that "he would never do that" or "how could Rian ruin Luke like that" etc. etc. I have seen very little thought out examinations from people with these criticisms that are just whining about how Luke is now ruined for them and how Rian ruined the franchise.

I consider changing dialogue, editing. Idk if thats agreed upon. Im aware the dialogue had been changed as one of the biggest changes was whether or not Deckards monologues were present in the film. However, the argument against the changes Lucas imposed on the OT is really just an entirely different animal from this sort of thing.

Some people do not know how to analyze such a theme.

The audience's reactions pretty much echo Rey and Kylo's differing interpretation of Luke to varying degrees.

One of my favorite parts of this thread is Crait autocorrecting to Craig and no one noticing.

i disagree, it fucking sucks and has ruined the integrity of Jason and Thomas developed in the original series and should be redacted from the canon. i mean, what is it even an encore to? and by allowing subscribers to listen earlier, Chorus is just crushing die-hard fans. i wish the franchise was still overseen by SpinMedia.

I think we're finally learning what an Ensemble cast looks like. There can be a good number of main characters. Kylo, Luke, Rey, Finn, Poe are the main characters because the arcs they are involved in revolve around their personal development.

Also, currently listening to the West Wing which had like 382 main characters at any given moment lol

The ultimate courage of what Rian Johnson has done here, is that he fully embraced what it is to be a director who obviously grew up as true fan of Star Wars, and retconned the whole universe into a new understanding of The Force. It’s the kind of revolutionary rethinking of the most successful pop culture franchise of all time that I would have thought would not be possible by anyone but George Lucas, and certainly not under the auspices of Disney. But here we are.

Though it’s well-grounded in the first definitions of The Force that we were introduced to in the original trilogy, The Last Jedi presents a radically inclusive new view of the Force that is bigger and broader than the Jedi religion which has thus-far colored our view of the entire Star Wars universe. (This is also why lost-cause diehards will likely always hate this film.)

On a personal level, it really makes me smile to know that in Carrie Fisher’s last film, in her most famous role, she’d get to know that the vision of what the franchise was about would be broadened to include everyone. Now, every kid who ever picked up a broomstick and pretended to be Luke Skywalker with a lightsaber is canonically one with the Force. It’s a wonderful summation of what Star Wars, at its best, represents in culture.

The only way the final shot could have been more perfect were if it weren’t a white boy kid with the broom.
