I think my favorite bluray edit is placing a rock in front of R2 when he's hiding from the Jawas . I love that George looked at that scene and his brain said, "this isn't right but I know exactly what it needs."

At least from the still, you can see quite clearly where the CGI blends with the original set. The two sides clash, and the lighting looks like an Instagram filter.

I really do enjoy the score for the movie but it’s not as fun as the tfa soundtrack was, not as many new themes.

If someone started recutting songs by the Beatles with ProTools, brand new instruments, and modern synthesizers to fit the current standard of what recorded music sounds and told everyone that they 'fixed' them, everyone would rightfully clown them. Even if they sounded perfect, the original charm would be scrubbed away. Flaws and limits are part of the appeal of older sci-fi and it's weird that George Lucas didn't understand that.

What if It was Paul and Ringo doing the recutting?

I liked this so much more on the second round. Like legit was an entirely different movie for me.

I do agree with hamill, that the staying low key for 10+ years is real extreme for the character, but I think the projection fight pay off was really epic and a fitting end.

    Only gripes i still have.

    Carrie Poppins is awful
Bout 25% too much humor. I don’t want humorless but it was a little over the top at moments.
Casino horse scene was a bit too long...prob would have liked it a lot more if they weren’t riding then
Laura Dern was half awesome, half unbelievable for me.

Right now this is tied with TFA. Prob won’t move the needle until I see what JJ does with the next one.

Speaking of JJ, I think a lot of the initial backlash I had was because he made such an open ended movie that my expectations for those questions really hampered my first viewing. I pray he actually closes out his and RJs storylines in the final episode.

If he losts it, I will lose it.

Gah I should have just used them in my analogy.

I would be super disappointed in them. Even if Sir George Martin (RIP) spearheaded it. Remasters are one thing. They are necessary to preserve art as technology changes. But making huge changes to a classic piece of art and saying that it is better just because it has more modern parts is foolish. The Special Editions don't look like modern films. They look like old films with some weird incongruous new shit blended in.

Of course, part of the reason I'm upset about all of George Lucas's fiddling is that the original cuts stopped being officially released so the new cuts could sell. If there were official remasters on the market, I could just treat the Special Editions like a curious experiment. Unfortunately, since George Lucas wants us to think that they are the definitive editions, I have to care about them.

I agree and I think artists should be allowed to change/tinker with what they've created if they think it will result in a better final result. Unfortunately ZERO of the changes he made resulted in a better result and actually made it worse lol.
The best example I can think of is Blade Runner: Final Cut where they removed some visible strings from flying models, fixed some audio sync issues, and matched the sky at the end so it resembles the surrounding environment.

This is is a nit pick but it wasnt 10+ years. in Bloodline which was 6 years before TFA Luke was apparently still with Ben at that point. Dont know for sure though when Ben turned but it was probably around 5-6years?. Still your criticism means the same.

Glad you enjoyed the film more!

I am also really glad I enjoyed it more.
I was so gosh darn bummed that I didnt like it.

Now I just don’t want to go deep on some podcasts. Lol

That throne room fight in combo with the light speed jump is maybe the best 20 minutes of the whole series.

Agreed. Loved whole how the tension built all throughout that. Holdo turning the ship/Hux's reaction/Kylo asking Rey to join her/the lightsaber breaking/finn and Rose's execution all culminated at the same time and built up perfectly.

I think the film suffered from too many very big plots that all needed screen time that it got too messy and felt like it had a bad pace, but in that moment it was perfect and beautifully cut.

Blade Runner is a good example of how subtle changes can improve a film, and considering how much the studio tinkered with the release, it makes sense that Ridley Scott wanted to do a recut. Blade Runner also didn't have embarrassing extended CGI jazz sequences grafted on haha. I definitely agree that artists have the right to make changes! It just sucks when the original piece is buried even though it was a finished product that could stand on its own and was widely considered fine as is.

“Yeah I always intended for a huge dinosaur to walk in front of the camera and make you not able to see our main characters.”

Imagine if Lucas had made Jaws. Oh my god he’d have tinkered with the shark so hard decades later.

Now that I think about it, the whole complaint by Mark and others that Luke wouldn't give up and sulk on an island for years is more of a complaint at JJ. JJ's the one who put him on an island all this time. I think at that point Rian had to give him a good justification for doing so which I think he did.

Small gripe, and it may have been covered in the 260+ pages here already, but Finn and Rose’s kiss/“things you love” thing was a little abrupt right? Wasn’t their plot timeline over like 24 hours or so since they said the ship was running out of fuel?

I still think the worst modification made to these movies is Darth Vader saying "no" and then "nooooo" before he decides to save Luke in Return of the Jedi. By far my favorite scene in the series, arguably the most pivotal, and it was absolutely ruined. I still haven't bought any of the OT on Blu-Ray because of it. That's the one that pushed me over the edge.

    AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

It does feels a little awkward. Remember though, Rose already idolized him as a hero when they met.

The changes in Blade Runner were just editing, not cgi or whatever else.
