I don’t like them as much as something like Strange New Worlds, but I think they were a very accessible entry point to a franchise that can seem impossibly large and background-heavy for newcomers at this point. It’s a loss in my eyes even if they’re not the best of Trek
I enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed TNG and DS9, and while I can't say I don't understand the criticism, I think there was certainly room for both takes on Trek to thrive.
At first I thought you were responding to someone I had blocked, but after checking in Secret Mode and finding nothing, are you actually replying to the post Hal made back in August? Sorry, just hard to parse without a quote.
My zoomer coworker asking me the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars Me: *explaining the entire plot of The Measure Of A Man and Darmok*
Not a big thing for most of us, but all the classic Star Trek series are getting pulled from Netflix internationally next month.
Giving Starfleet Academy a try. Hopefully I don't actually need to have seen all of discovery to follow this cause I'm definitely confused by the whole first class in 120 years thing... The EMH aging is incredibly funny. What a weird casting choice would rather the show just be able to be it's own things without a stunt casting The ship design is cool but also seems super impractical
I’ve watched the first few episodes, and honestly I really am not enjoying it. It plays like it was written by people who like sci-fi generally but have never watched Star Trek before. It’s the first time I’ve ever had this reaction but it feels way more like Star Wars to me. It’s missing the whole utopian future thing in favor of a faux-gritty space pirate universe. I think lot of the Star Wars vibe is also coming from the cinematography and sort of weird random-blips style audio design. They literally have little droids flying around making droid noises. Add to that the fact that it really doesn’t seem to care too much about continuity (for example it has retconned the Betazoids as all being strictly empaths like Troi) and it really just feels like a generic high school drama with occasional space pirates and a few Star Trek aliens
