to get more context i'm going back and rewatching all the Maquis episodes of TNG and DS9 now. Bout to watch the one where Sisko pretty much commits a war crime by launching chemical weapons at that Maquis colony again.
Maquis subplots always bothered me. Starfleet supposed to be socialist but their whole framework is based on the western military industrial complex so when someone questions that we can't say anything but oh you must be evil It's like those terrible shows and movies where the villains are leftist but also decapitate schoolchildren for no reason. DS9 wanted to confront starfleet's obvious ills but always gave them a cheap way out of the penalty box because you'd have to upend the whole show if you wanted to be honest about fixed hierarchies and unearned privileges and galaxy police
Loved the last episode of SNW, but it they left that dog to die down there then Starfleet and the Federation are a lie
Also I need to go and watch TOS 2x01 "Amok Time" now, as this latest episode of SNW was pretty much it's direct prequel.
It’s a good one. The only TOS episode to show Vulcan and first to show the Vulcan hand sign. I like that last week’s episode showed more of T’Pau.
Watching DS9 4x06 "Rejoined". Still can't believe Star Trek did an episode this beautiful about queer love and gender fluidity in fucking 1995. Trek really has always been 5 steps ahead of the rest of pop culture in terms of it's social politics, which is why the doofuses who try the "SJWs are ruining the stuff i like with wokeness!" bullshit on Star Trek like they do with Star Wars are just snitching on themselves for not being actual Star Trek fans.
Now watching DS9 4x15 "Bar Association" where Rom unionizes Quark's Bar. "You don't understand. Ferengi workers don't want to stop the exploitation, they want to become the exploiters someday themselves" This line is *chef's kiss* perfect.
That + Roddenberry saying Ferengi are supposed to modern humanity if they never improved + that one Orwell quote about temporary embarrassed millionaires means somebody on that writing staff was reading leftist memes in 1994 somehow
SNW just does not miss. This is already shaping up to be the most consistent Star Trek ever (and definitely the best first season)
The other Trek spinoff idea I've had for awhile: A series focusing on Starfleet Medical set on a Federation hospital ship and it's all about speculative medical science fiction and bioethics. Like House meets M*A*S*H but on a spaceship where they deal with nanobot infections and alien parasites and stuff like that.
Also speaking of Starfleet Medical I've come to the determination that Dr. Julian Bashir might be my favorite Star Trek character, followed closely by Miles O'Brien. Any time them together really is just the absolute best. Bashir's series arc though is just so good. One of the best developed characters in the entire franchise IMO. His friendships with Miles and Garak, his love arc with both Dax incarnations, his genetically engineered arc, his Section 31 arc, his Holodeck LARPing stuff with O'Brien all great.
Since we have Spock’s sister, I wondered if we’d see Sybok in the new Star Trek shows. Here we go. A rewatch of Star Trek V is calling my name.
It’s worth a watch just because of how wacky it is. Sybok’s goal is to go to the center of the galaxy to kill God, the film’s antagonist.
Can't wait for the weird whale probe thing from IV to be the main antagonist of season 2 lol In all seriousness though if we're exploring TOS era movie villains in SNW it would be kind of cool if young versions of Commander Kruge or General Chang eventually showed up too.
