Touché. I think I was really put off by the “did your father disapprove” question. That was when I was like wtf is going on here. seems like series of disconnects. Sounds like Annie is annoyed at her PR/team, which has put her in a predicament this cycle (but also the album title etc...idk seems like if an artist shuts it down, especially if it’s personal ie father/daughter relationship, that should be respected, regardless of the album title) . But she has also put interviewers in ridiculous situations, clearly this wasn’t a situation of “retribution”, and it seems as though the “room” gag was a poorly conceived bit for the MASSEDUCTION press cycle (but idk, because I have never heard of it till now which makes it just seem mean spirited). Basically what I’m saying is you should be allowed to create art that you’re comfortably expressing one way (music/album/song) but maybe not another (interview/press). That feels fair to me. Would be different if we were talking about worldview shit here, but we aren’t.
I don't know about Annie, but I'd probably be nervous as shit and not be thinking straight if I had to talk to someone just before talking to Paul McCartney.
Yeah I'm willing to put the whole situation into the "I'm talking to Paul McCartney in an hour" bucket. Would be cool of her to do a makegood of some kind, but the journalist definitely tanked that chance by publishing everything and causing a sign. No winners here!
I am actually quite excited for this record. The last two days were a weird digression but those song descriptions were pretty cool.
I also just have a hard time believing Annie Clark would be quivering with fear before talking to Paul McCartney. LIke yeah it's a big deal but it's hardly the first time she's been in conversation with superstars.
Here’s a good conversation that covers a lot of the same topics in a more positive way. Trying to get myself back into hype mode because MASSEDUCTION is my favorite St Vincent record. Midnight Chats presented by Loud And Quiet: Ep 104: St. Vincent on Apple Podcasts
I honestly love masseduction, surprised that the vibe seems to be that a lot of people didn’t like it
I've never really loved Strange Mercy tbh. something about the way that record sounds has always been a little...irritating to me? I love Actor and s/t
Actor Mass Seduction s/t Strange Mercy Marry Me Love This Giant And I love Annie and Byrne on their own.
Cruel, Northern Lights, Champagne Year, the title track, Year of the Tiger, Chloe in the Afternoon. Strange Mercy is such a knock out record to me. Probably give it close to a 10/10.
Feel like the more the narrative becomes about the aesthetics of the album (which is how i feel about S/T and Masseduction) the less I enjoy her stuff. Some artists can enhance their music by doing that, it’s just never clicked with me when she tries to do the iconography thing. Although there’s songs i really like off of S/T, Masseduction was super uneven to me and the singles off this i can hardly even register.
I think I'd rate Strage Mercy higher if I wasn't so down on Cheerleader and Chloe in the Afternoon. Cheerleader was everywhere and I found it obnoxious.
