Spotify Redesigns Home Screen

    The Verge:

Spotify is redesigning the core homescreen of its app, trying to make it easier for users to find new stuff to listen to — and watch. The new design goes heavy on imagery and vertical scrolling, turning your homescreen from a set of album covers into a feed that much more closely resembles TikTok and Instagram. As you scroll, Spotify is also hoping to make it easier to discover new things across the Spotify ecosystem.

The new look, which Spotify just announced at its Stream On event, is clear evidence of the kind of company (and product) Spotify wants to be. Over the last few years, it has invested heavily into podcasts, audiobooks, live audio, and more, all in an attempt to be more than just a music app. The company also wants to be a home for creators: Spotify CEO Daniel Ek told The Verge in 2021 that he hoped to have more than 50 million “audio creators” on the platform. Spotify has also pushed for years to make video podcasts happen and is now largely watching as YouTube pulls it off.

    Uh, pass.

To me, this is their first real miss in a very, very long time. Still much prefer Spotify over Apple Music though.

  3. This is bad. How about making playlists able to be longer than 10,000 songs, or making the library better/main focus of the app, or hi-fi, or literally any of the other long-requested features?

I never really used Spotify. I was an iTunes guy from the start, then moved to Rdio because it felt similar to that, and then rode with Rdio until Apple Music launched - all because it just fit how my brain processes the organization of albums/playlists/etc.

Yet I have always been jealous of the social aspect of Spotify, discover playlists, and the ability to collaborate on playlists. However, every time I try to use it - I just get so turned off by the amount of digital clutter of the UI and how the music videos start to play, etc. when all I want to do is just listen to music. Unfortunately, this new redesign feels like they are doubling down on all the things I don't like about Spotify.

I'm hoping Apple can just keep their heads down, develop and perfect the things the Spotify does well like collaborative playlists for example, and I think they will continue to pull more users in. Especially if Spotify continues down the path they are on.

Spotify’s UI and library management continue to be awful. Apple Music > and it isn’t even close
