Spotify has officially announced their new royalty system:

However, as the royalty pool and catalog on Spotify have surged, three particular drains on the royalty pool have now reached a tipping point. So, we’re working in close collaboration with industry partners — artist distributors, independent labels, major labels, label distributors, and artists and their teams — to introduce new policies to (1) further deter artificial streaming, (2) better distribute small payments that aren’t reaching artists, and (3) rein in those attempting to game the system with noise.

I guess the 1,000 streams threshold isn't too high to have a material impact on royalties paid to smaller acts, but I'd be interested in hearing other perspectives on the matter.

I assume it's a case of "the rich get even richer" middle-tier bands do slightly better and indie/start-up artists are getting the shaft. Am I on the right track, here?

Yes, although I was expecting Spotify to require a much higher number of streams to become eligible for royalties.

Nevertheless, it's still a case of Spotify skewing payments in favour of bigger artists. Not a fan since (in my book) royalties shouldn't be contingent on anything other than the number of times a song is played.
