are you on feige’s payroll? it’s just baffling, your determination to defend the MCU at this point

Yes. But the MCU is a partnership between Sony and Disney, and what serves Spider-Man/the MCU serves both. Feige has said the same things like they have the same list of talking points.

i’m still begging to find out which one of Holland’s movies he thinks has been in the oscar’s conversation

i love lost city of z but a) he’s barely in it lol and b) it’s closer to a critics top 10 list movie than an oscar conversation movie

I would like to see No Way Home get a best picture nomination.

I'd like to see it to see people lose their minds, but I don't realistically think that it's worth an Oscar nomination. It was a really good movie, and I know the Oscars are pretty meaningless in general, but I feel like the Oscars should mean something a little more substantial than just "this movie was enjoyable".

The Oscars nominate MCU movies constantly, even once for Best Picture. No one loses their minds. They nominate bad movies all the time too, No Way Home wouldn’t be a break with tradition. Which is part of why all the Marvel people saying they have to overcome the stigma of being a Marvel movie at the Academy is so asinine

Off topic, but this comment makes me think about how the internet has allowed us to simply erase people from our vision instead of just learning to better communicate with each other as equals. True progress.

No Way Home was great but it’s not on the level of something like Black Panther in terms of being worthy of awards recognition imo

It’s true, though. Scorsese doesn’t know what it’s like to make a Marvel film. I don’t see anything condescending in what Holland said.

To be fair, they're usually nominated for technical awards, aren't they? I don't doubt people wouldn't bat an eye at a special effects nom, but I feel like Best Picture would raise an eyebrow at least, wouldn't it?

Scorsese has been a director for 50 years and made movies with all sorts of studios and distributors. He likely has a solid guestimate of what it’s like to work for Marvel.

Did Black Panther raise an eyebrow? I remember that mostly being celebrated.

He still doesn’t know what it is like to make a Marvel film and he won’t unless he ever makes one. He can guesstimate, but that’s not the same as actually having the experience of making one.

No director who has made a Marvel film talks about Marvel films in the same vein as Scorsese. Scott Derrickson is probably the one with the closest views. Until Scorsese makes a Marvel film, it’s just outsider perspective.

Funnily enough, most Marvel movies don’t actually deserve Best Visual Effects nominations. Their visual effects are often only passable at best and surprisingly bad at worst.

I want to see No Way Home get nominated, not because of people losing their minds because I don’t think the majority of people will mind if it’s nominated. I want to see it get nominated because it’s a love letter to that universe and it could have gone wrong in so many ways but it somehow succeeded, just like Infinity War, which I think should have been nominated as well.

Marty made some offhand comments in an interview two years ago and explained himself further in an essay that seemingly no one read. Marvel fans and cast/executives are who keep the debate alive.

Marty knows what he’s talking about, I trust his thoughts.

Scorsese made Casino so he can say what he damn well pleases

It would be great if these writers would just stop asking about Scorsese’s essay because then this bullshit would mercifully stop. But they get too many eyeballs from the Marvel fans who blow a gasket over it and from the non-Marvel fans who need their regular dose of smug superiority so the cycle repeats ad nauseum.

Marvel fans are not always the first ones to bring up Scorsese in threads or treat Marvel films as the downfall of cinema. It’s about 50/50

I trust Marty’s thoughts, too, as an outsider’s perspective

I can guarantee it is. There are a few users who just need to share in these threads how Marvel films lack cinematic integrity.

I don’t see anyone going to other threads and forcing in a “this wasn’t as good as this new Marvel movie” comment but it’s not unusual to see a hit at Marvel films in a Marvel thread.
