Nothing will ever top some random guy hyena laughing to the Joker saying “and I thought my jokes were bad.” No one else laughed. It was just him and the room was full.

I still remember it like it happened yesterday and this was July 2008.

Cap picking up Mjolnir was part of the story whether people were going to clap or not and was foreshadowed years in advance. Marvel didn’t add that scene into the film just for claps.

I didn’t say they did. That scene works. I said they want that reaction, and pack their movies with moments designed for theater reactions.

Writers for sure look look for those moments, but I think it’s good storytelling to be able to deliver such buildups over numerous films. Those moments wouldn’t get the same reaction if audiences were not deeply invested into the characters and if getting the audience to become emotionally attached to a character isn’t part of great storytelling then I’m tossing out my LOTR and King Hu box sets.

I think it’s insular storytelling that often attempts the big moment without doing enough of the dramatic work to earn it most of the time and I have seen MCU crowds (and Star Wars crowds) pop off for the tiniest of references that have nothing to do with the story being told. Sometimes it works, and the MCU is good at feeling likable and fun so there is a certain success they’re having in their craftsmanship, but largely it falls flat for me because it’s not for me, it’s for people who watch every single MCU thing that’s made and it’s to reward that brand loyalty and give fans what they want. Dramatic storytelling feels secondary, hence Scorsese’s theme park comments and my WWE comparison.

but like I said after this I am mercifully done with the MCU, they have successfully diminished their returns enough that I’m no longer interested in anything they do, and my saying that does not take away whatever connection anyone else has to it.

If I was writing for highly known IP film franchise I would definitely write stuff in the story that flows naturally but will also be appreciated by the viewer. If they express that appreciation from clapping or cheering then whatever.

I still remember when I saw The Last Jedi the first time and the theater erupted with cheers when Holdo used light speed to go through the first order. I honestly didn’t know that scene was completely silent until the second viewing.

The main difference between the MCU and other blockbusters that get similar theater-erupting moments is that quite a number of the MCU moments are adapted (or at least influenced) from the source material so there is some credibility toward their placements.

Feige is a huge fan of the source material and was involved with Marvel films before the MCU. He seems to actually care about fully representing the characters that are adapted and that will include using iconic moments from the comics that visual show the character reaching the “peak of the mountain”, so long as they are not used too soon.

But, yeah, you’re right. Just as much as I see them as legitimate capstones to some character journeys, you and others can equally see them as simple fan service meant to be raise emotions to guarantee another ticket purchased.

And perhaps they’re both. I’m sure a handful of people in the Marvel committee do only see dollar signs when these scenes are being developed.

I did enjoy the comedy in this movie a lot, I can't lie about that. It was a pretty funny movie.

The one fan servicey moment I was expecting but didn’t get was when Doc Ock sees Tobey’s Peter for the first time and doesn’t say “brilliant but lazy”.

We also got the "power of the sun" line not once, but twice

and it was super clunky and awkward both times

What this film needed was Stark to reappear and perhaps go to Garfield’s universe so he can be in ASM3

These sort of details don’t hinder my enjoyment of anything but why didn’t they play with Doctor Strange being canon in the Raimiverse?

Probably because they didn’t secure enough time with Cumberbatch. IIRC, he immediately started filming MOM and was only on the Spider-Man set for 2 or 3 weeks.

I meant even a reference, both Maguire and Garfield have no idea who he is. Not a big deal at all but I did think of it in the moment

Tony had the perfect send off. Bringing him back would lessen the impact it had, even if it’s a multiverse version of him.
