Spider-Man: No Way Home (Jon Watts, December 17, 2021) Movie • Page 77

  1. No I definitely get that overall maybe they’re not but at this point in time, yes they certainly are. But like I said, I might be overlooking some stuff or misremembering the film a bit but all things considered in the context of this film Peter gets off pretty easy considering the things he is directly responsible for.

I do like the rehabilitation element of this film a lot - just think there was a better way to plot it overall to be less messy. If my ramblings make any sense haha.

His aunt gets brutally murdered and everyone he’s ever known and loved forgets he existed, I don’t really think he “gets off easy” for anything if you’re for some reason looking for him to be “punished” for the crime of being empathetic and trying to help the villains lol

  3. But on a positive note - some great webslinging in this. Action was considerably more visceral than in other SM films. I also really liked the bit about MCU Pete using his experience with the Avengers to help plan the 3 SM attacks - thought that was great growth for him as a leader and built off his McU experience really well.

  4. Thats fair but he did bring upon the villains and the destruction they caused. And logically Aunt May wasn’t the only hurt or potentially killed in that sequence or others in the film. Also, killing May was a ridiculous choice.

Killing May was a great choice, she was able to fulfill the Uncle Ben role that MCU Peter never experienced. And also Marisa Tomei was clearly done with the role so they wrote her a perfect exit.

I’m sure there are people nitpicking the shit out of this movie, so before I subject myself to any of those posts I just have to say that I loved this. It’s weird to say that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been in like 6 or 7 movies already, but is starting anew from a place that really feels like Spider-Man classic.

  7. You’re not wrong but May, to me at least, is one of the most important SM characters in grounding Peter. Now personally I didn’t love this iteration but I’ll stop being a negative ass aha.

But seriously I love discussing this stuff with you all - hopefully it’s not coming across like I’m trying to be a troll.

We got a three-film origin story for this version of Spider-Man, a whole coming-of-age trilogy. Now we get to see him be the hero he was meant to be.

Don’t get me wrong, I really loved the movie. And all the stupid stuff doesn’t get in the way of my enjoyment. But I also like to nitpick lol. Like I wanna know what is the result of them going after Stark Industries? And who was held responsible for Mysterios death after all?

They say on a news report that there were other injuries but only one death, which we know to be Aunt May.

I’ve got another question the more I think about it. If Peter rehabilitated/fixed the villains and they then got sent back to their respective universes - thereby fulfilling his plan to save them from death - what does that mean for them when they do go back? Wouldn’t, by the MCU logic, this make them variants so the universes they return to are branch universes of their universe now? Or do they just pop back into modern day in their universes as if they’d been blipped and everyone must now accept that they’re all alive again somehow?

I thought movie said they would go back to the moments they left from. Which actually means Doc Ock is still going to die lol

Yeah because he was already going to redeem himself and sacrifice his life to stop the fusion reactor, so his fate is still to drown in the river lol

I'll just wait for the Pitch Meeting video to pick this apart in a way I can laugh at but I loved this too much to analyze every minute as deeply as some feel the need to lol. Not hating on anybody, I get it, I'm just way past caring enough to nitpick shit to that degree and I can't wait to watch this again.

Excited for where these movies go from here, it should be a lot more classic Spider-man, fingers crossed

Uncle Ben not existing is still weird to me. Like, Peter mentioned being bit by a spider for the first time, and Tobey mentioned his Uncle Ben, and Peter went to May’s grave, and MCU Ben is still conspicuously nonexistent. Weirder when you consider at least one Homecoming script said the suit Peter wore was Ben’s.

Don't think it’s a Feige thing ‘cause that What If show I didn’t watch apparently mentions him. Don’t think it’s a Pascal thing because Spider-Verse. Was it a Watts thing?

It is weird that they have Peter using Ben’s luggage in Far From Home but never bring him up. Doesn’t ruin anything, but it’s weird.

I talked about it with a friend last night and we basically agreed that MCU Uncle Ben just must have died some other way that wasn’t related to Peter being Spider-Man. Maybe Peter didn’t know him that well, like he died when Peter was much younger, when he first came to live with them, before the spider bite. They changed Peter’s origin story to be what we’ve seen now across three movies, ending with Aunt May fulfilling the Uncle Ben role instead.

This. 100%. I'm glad they finally drove home "with great power, must come great responsibility" in Peter, it was long overdue, but May plays an important role in his life.

In Civil War doesn’t Peter say something about losing someone close to him and it was implied to be Uncle Ben?

“When you can do the things that I can, but you don’t, and then the bad things happen? They happen because of you”

that’s the quote I’m thinking of. It doesn’t explicitly imply that he lost someone close, I misremembered that, though I think when I saw that movie I read it as a reference to the traditional not stopping the guy who then kills uncle Ben origin story.

Also, jeez, what a terrible rewrite of the great power line

He says “When you can do the things that I can, but you don’t, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you.”

He never mentions he’s doing it because of anyone that died, at least not in Civil War.
