Yeah I have a 9 min scene of the final fight. it's pretty sweet.

Marvel's CGI still really leaves something to be desired, though

I've kind of resigned myself to getting spoiled at this point. I'm probably not going to get to the cinema until the new year.

    So assuming that this weekend...

Sony did not collect or lock up any of our phones at the premiere.

I’m not saying that they deserve to have videos already up online, but what I will say is that Disney has mad me lock up my phone for every single premiere I’ve attended and it would have been VERY difficult for me to sneak in something to record. On Monday night, I could have recorded a ton of the movie if I wanted to.

Didn't like this. The last 40 minutes of this was an absolute cringe-fest. I don’t hate Marvel and I don’t hate these films but all they are is, we want this character to appear at some point and this ending to happen but they don’t know how to build a story around it. It’s the exact same in Loki and Hawkeye too. They need to take more time to write and plan these films because they’re built for the first viewing at that’s it.

Into the Spider-Verse is a much smarter and interesting version of this.

Into the Spider-Verse and No Way Home are completely different stories. The only similarity is that each film has more than one Spider-Man. The existence and purpose of the multiverse opening in both are completely opposite and each film hinges on the respective purpose, so I don’t see how Into the Spider-Verse is a smarter version or vice versa.

They both follow similar character beats and the introduction of said characters actually works in Spider-Verse. This film was like sketch comedy for the last 40 minutes.

They’re similar in that they’re both celebrations of Spider-Man’s history/legacy, but as far as storytelling and themes go they’re completely different. Yeah Spider-Verse is obviously still better, but this does significantly better with the multiverse concept than I was expecting it to

The only really similar character beat was the ”origin story” scenes when the Spider-Verse characters talked about who they lost.

Also the last 40 minutes definitely wasn’t like sketch comedy lol. This is by far the most dramatic conclusion to any of the MCU Spidey movies

Maybe the humour didn't work for me then. You can definitely tell that they were writing the script as they were filming. Willem Dafoe was MVP though.

Saw this last night at the midnight launch in Melbourne. Loved it, minus a couple of things.

    Careful, SPOILERS and thoughts here:

    Again, SPOILERS.

First hour when all the villains starting coming through, I feel as though Strange skimmed over the whole multiverse explanation to Peter. "They're from the multiverse." "Cool, I need to get them back." and that's about it. I would've liked it more if Peter was more intrigued by their backstories, or even showed a little more confusion or worry about the whole "there's other Peter Parkers?" thing before going straight into capturing them. It was basically like "Cool they're here. I've gotta send them back." More deep-diving into all of that would've been cool, but I can see why they had to speed those plot points along.

LOVED Norman's "Y'know, I'm something of a scientist myself..." line. Fuck yes.

First emotional hit for me came when May died. Was brutal, and Favreau and Holland nailed that scene. Heavy stuff. Resonant of Ben in Spidey 1.

From the moment Andrew and Tobey showed up, the movie soared from there. Pure joy is the emotion I'd use to describe it. Our cinema erupted in claps as they came through their portals. The quips, banter, back-and-forths and chemistry between the 3 Spideys was insanely good. Andrew speaking about Gwen was a great moment, and the 3 of them in the lab was great. The second they started fighting together, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Everything about that Liberty scene was fucking great. Loved that Andrew saved MJ, and got his moment. Huge emotional swell there...and the fact that they brought back both Andrew and Tobey's scores as they interacted with their villains...so good. Loved every second all 3 Spideys were on-screen together. Any shortfalls this movie has, is made up for just for this 45 minutes or so.

There's more, but these are just initial thoughts after only 12 hours. Favourite Spidey movie? I dunno. Had some amazing fucking moments though.

  17. Liked

    - Charlie Cox, even though it felt like a split second and pointless, love Charlie and was so happy to see him and see more of him
    - Arian Moayed and more JB Smoove
    - Andrew Garfield was so lovable and charismatic and gave such an earnest heartbreaking performance
    - Dafoe and Molina and the fact everyone cheered more for the actors themselves than the actual villains (crowd when nuts when Dafoe's face was first shown)
    - I'm something of a scientist myself made me smile
    - Epic swinging in the snow, wish it could've lasted longer

    Disliked

    - I think now may be a good time for Marvel to ease out of the crossover obsession. It felt tired in this one, it's completely lost the element of surprise
    - So many emotional moments yet... something's missing for them to really hit home and I don't know what that is. The ending was heartbreaking and the greatest example of Peter's ongoing sacrifice, but something about it makes it feel so... inorganic and pre-calculated I can't really be moved by any of it
    - Didn't really like the final fight. It was cool that Goblin was the big bad and Dafoe had plenty of time to do his evil face and voice, but it didn't come close to the weight of the Spider-Man 2 dock scene or even TASM2 clock tower scene
    - What was with Peter taking a group of his villains from another dimension to Happy's apartment to cure them? I get the message a out his character and his morality that scene felt really off
    - Like with Charlie Cox, the way Andrew and Tobey were revealed was a little anticlimactic
    - Wish we could've gotten actual Thomas Hayden Church, I think that was CG?

    On your second points:

I thought the reveal was great...the cheers/claps/crying from the people I was in the cinema with made it that much sweeter.
I agree on the apartment stuff. Why there? Take them to a lab or leave them where they are and work with them there. Did feel a bit off.

    And overall:

I'm just glad Tobey and Andrew's Spider-men got some closure to their arcs. For me it felt like they were there for both the nostalgia, and with emotional purpose. The way to do it.
