I’m moving to Taiwan on the 7th and will have to go through a lengthy quarantine period ~ 3 weeks, so I won’t be able to watch this until New Years.

Someone confirm the spoilers for me.

First, I'm not saying this couldn't work or be interesting. If it happened I'd be willing to accept it and give it a shot just as much as I did Spider-Man being mentored by Tony Stark. It could be fun.

That being said, I guess I don't see the two of them as being as similar as you do. I will freely admit I'm partially viewing Lizard through the lens of his adaptations, since most non-comic works tends to have him being a mentor to Peter in some fashion. I completely forgot in the comics they were total strangers until he became the Lizard.

Venom though, I've never seen him as being a man at war with the monster. If anything I've seen him as a man who embraces the monster. I think the films are the first time I've ever seen Brock painted as someone who was reluctant to accept the symbiote. So I guess I agree that movie Venom might have more of a connection to build on, but I still have trouble seeing it as an exact match. I think of Venom more like The Odd Couple vs. Lizard's straight-up Hyde.

I think it's also just me kind of hating that Sony is making these Spider-Man films removed from Spider-Man and not wanting more of his cast taken away from him than necessary, so that's coloring my thoughts.

China is wanting a December 10th release so it looks like some may want to go a week without the internet.

Sure, Venom’s been done with odd couple vibes, particularly in those dope movies, but their dynamic has been done a lot of ways. The 90s era of him starring in a bunch of miniseries had plenty of tension between Eddie and the symbiote. And, yeah, it’s not exactly the same as Lizard’s vibe, but it’s similar enough for the comparisons & contrasts to be fertile storytelling soil.

And, we already got Curt in the Raimi movies, plus Lizard in ASM. Spidey’s rogues gallery is deep enough, and they’re allergic enough to repeating what’s come before (to a fault), that doing another take on the character in a different character’s film makes sense to me. Both Venom movies are better than both Watts Spidey movies anyways, so yeah.

Saying something is better than the Watts films isn’t really saying much. That’s a pretty low bar to clear.

The first Venom is about as good as Homecoming. I haven’t seen the second.

I wish someone other than Watts was involved with these films, but I truly don't understand the love for Venom (still haven't seen the sequel though). I thought the writing was very weak and it was just kind of boring

Venom rules because it’s goopy, toothy fun that doesn’t take itself too seriously or overstay its welcome, anchored by a thoroughly engaging lead performance by Tom Hardy having the absolute time of his life. It’s truly a breath of fresh air for someone like me who loves this genre and has deep nostalgia for early 90s Spider-Man, but is so tired of the Marvel Studios machine.

Let There Be Carnage is all of that taken even further, in the best way. :venom:

Venom was fine I guess. Haven’t seen the second yet.

I recently rewatched all the Spidey films and don’t there has been a great one since the second Rami one. Well, in the context of a Peter Parker Spidey films. Into the Spiderverse is the best Spidey universe at this point.

I will definitely be seeing Venom V Carnage once it's for rental and not purchase-only. I hope I enjoy it more than the first :-p

Let There be Carnage is fun if you go into it with the expectation of a crazier version of the first film.

Venom and the Watts films are apples and oranges to me. Two totally different amounts of energy pouring from both. Deciding on which I enjoy more depends entirely on my mood.

Venom 1 was okay. Venom 2 I regretted spending $13 half way through the film. That’s not to say the films are bad, they’re just not my style. The films are way too absurd for me.

Watts maybe has the least directorial identity in a cinematic universe where most directors are stripped of their identity

  19. There’s a time traveling dimension hopping wizard with a goatee in the new Spider-Man … Venom’s pretty tame tbh

Didn't find either Venom movie that interesting personally. Not even saying the Jon Watts Spider-Man movies have like a distinctive directorial style at all, because they don't... but judging purely on which movie I found more entertaining and solidly made I definitely put those above the Venom movies, which I think are a throwback to the campiest early '00s superhero movies but often not in a good or very interesting way.
