It's also silly to overanalyze a slate of films (supposedly) in development when the future of the Spider-Man movie franchise is constantly in flux, dependent on the happenings of two different corporations' studios and the relationship between those corporations.

I’ll admit I’m over analyzing. I just don’t want future stories to be half baked due to the on/off relationship between Sony and Disney. With the multiverse that drama will leak into other projects.

I just rewatched the first Tobey movie for the first time in ages and it just didn't do much for me

I also rewatched the first Tobey movie recently. Not my favorite Spider-Man film, but it’s a fun movie that gets ever easier to appreciate for what it is the deeper we get into the reign of Disney’s Marvel Studios.

My biggest enduring criticism is MJ, who just never has the spark that I want out of the character. The pieces are mostly there, but she’s ultimately weighed down by the tropes of romance and adventure films into oblivion.

And, yeah, I’d likely rank Venom: Let There Be Carnage over most Spider-Man films, period. Below Spider-Verse & SM2, but otherwise, idk. Once you get past those awkwardly paced first 10 minutes, it’s just such a ridiculously fun romp.

I’ve watched TASM1 a few times recently. I enjoy it a lot more now than I did in 2012. Spider-Man ‘02 probably has a better score, but Garfield, Stone, Leary, and Sheen as Ben are all highlights for the Spider-Man franchise.

    Also, a decent international poster.

    Assume It's A Bit

I rewatched all of them a few weeks back and my biggest takeaway was that I like Spider-Man 2 a lot less than I remember. Everything with Ock is still great, but so much of the movie focuses on the romance and it’s easily the worst part of that whole trilogy

I agree overall it’s the worst part of the trilogy but I love the romance plot line in the second. Some good stuff in there.

My biggest takeaways from this are that I really like Electro's redesign and we can now be sure that the hooded man in the trailer was indeed Norman and not Ned or Harry like some lunatics were speculating.

I wish they'd let Lizard look more like the comics. At least give him a snout, for chrissake.

In less than a month we’ll all be watching the greatest Spider-Man film ever made (hopefully). I can feel the hype

I mean, the purpose of this movie is to smash the Tom Holland action figure against the action figures of the first 5 Spidey films. Electro's look is unpopular even amongst those of us who like that movie for what it is, for reasons beyond "what if they were more faithful to the classic Ditko designs," so of course they changed that, but the rest needs to keep that *Leo pointing at TV* energy.

If Sony hadn't decided to make the whole Venom series symbiote-centric (saving Carnage for the sequel and likely building towards a symbiote invasion film), I'd have liked a sequel where he fights Lizard, with a mix of Ditko, McFarlane, and Bachalo influences.

Speaking of Sony Marvel shit, outside of the Spider-Verse sequel, the project I'm most interested in right now by far is Kraven the Hunter. (Yes, more than this mess, lol.)

Very curious what the story ends up looking like. It initially was said to be inspired by Kraven's Last Hunt and have Spider-Man in it, but that was before they hired J.C. Chandor, and the relationship between Marvel Studios, Sony, and Tom Holland has been in flux since then. And, I honestly wouldn't be shocked if that shitty Morbius film flopped and convinced Sony to pull the plug on Kraven. But, if it does go into production next year, regardless of the specifics, it should be a pretty fun slice of the Spidey mythos brought to life.

That would frankly be weird to me, just because Venom and Lizard have absolutely no connection to each other outside of "Spider-Man characters", as far as I know.

Have they ever even interacted with each other outside of a nebulous team setting?

I always liked the "Kraven hunts Lizard" movie idea myself.

As for Venom, I think part of the problem is that Venom in the comics doesn't have any real non-symbiote villains outside of the Life Foundation and the Jury.

The latter might be cool to see. Maybe.

So? Honestly, who give a shit what has and hasn’t been done before? Venom and Lizard are a thematically and visually perfect pair.

Sony hit a home run with Tom Hardy as Venom and must’ve said, “ok, how can we follow the best casting with the absolute worst?”

I guess? I feel like the character is too tied up with Peter to make sense removing him from it. It feels like a waste of that connection and story potential. Mashing him with Brock just gives me real "Godzilla vs. Kong" vibes.

I mean, Venom is a character very much tied to Peter and yet that didn’t stop them from separating them entirely lol

I mean, he’s really not, though. Pete and Connors have had a fun recurring dynamic at times, but that relationship isn’t character-defining for either of them.

As for why Venom and Lizard would work… Thinking only visually is dumb, but it is still a fundamental piece of this genre, and Lizard’s design under artists like Todd McFarlane and Chris Bachalo works great next to Venom’s. Also, thematically, they’re both in that tradition of “man at war with the monster inside.” Plus, Curt’s anchor is his family, and a big part of Eddie’s baggage is his family. Factor in Eddie’s investigator side and Lizard’s first appearance being reports of a lizard man who’s discovered later in the issue to be Doctor Connors…

The story really writes itself! If I were at Sony, looking at that list of characters I had to work with and wondering what engaging genre films I could make with them, that’d be at the top of my list.
