The Shang-Chi trailers definitely give it a “fine” feeling, but they really under sale the film and how crazy it is. Tons of fun and surprises that were kept out.

It probably means nothing, but it's interesting to see that Miles Morales is part of the No Way Home set for the Marvel Legends action figures

Yeah, they tend to make the Marvel Legends line (with the exception of this Eternals line) like, a few movie figures, a few comic figures, and in this instance, the PS5 game for Miles.

I mean, the Build-A-Figure is Armadillo. No one's playing him in the MCU.

    Yet.

Nonplussed. A word for those moments where you don't know how to respond, except to maybe walk away and never speak of it again.

Just rewatched both ASM movies last night and had a blast. I actually think the CGI feels a lot more believable in those films than the Holland ones. I don't like the design of Lizard, but he looked very "real" if that makes sense. Watching Spidey web him up in the school and literally climb around his body like a real spider was so dope.

I'm so excited to see Garfield again.

That school scene pretty much nailed what I wanted to see in a Spiderman movie

Seriously, everything about it is so good. I love the Stan Lee scene where they're fighting in the background of the library lol. Peter catching the desk as it's about to hit him in the head cracks me up.

Marc Webb didn’t have the ability to really let loose with a specific vision like Sam Raimi (mostly) did, but he still had a specific creative voice that worked well for the character. Even with the corporate pressure to compete with the MCU, his take had a lot of personality and charm that leaked out here & there.

Some of Jon Watts’ Internet-y humor in the Holland films is fun, but going from Webb and Raimi (especially Raimi’s Spider-Man 2) to these films is such a bummer. So homogenous, vanilla, whatever in comparison. And, it’s even more pronounced when you look at Lord & Miller & friends getting to fully embrace their voice. (Venom less so, since Tom Hardy and Kelly Marcel were working from a preexisting structure, but I’d argue it’s still got more of a voice than Watts’ films.)

Which, that’s a big part of why, as much as seeing certain actors I like return will surely make me grin in the moment, I can only be so excited right now. I don’t have any reason yet to think this creative team will pull off more than a passable covers album.

  15. I think that's one of the biggest problems in making Spider-Man a mini-version of Iron Man, you lose an essence of the character, the teenager learning his own vulnerabilities while being a superhero, behind a mechanical suit.

I failed to save my uncle and that driving factor in the "loveable loser" that is Peter Parker being replaced by an Iron Man worship didn't serve the character very well.

(That and Jon Watts being not a good director.)

Rewatching Amazing Spiderman and what’s jumping out at me is the lack of Uncle Ben in the MCU. It’s so core to who Spider-Man is and why he does what he does and I know he tells Tony why, but it’s way different to actually see and feel why.

After years of hoping for a great Fantastic Four reboot (especially after Hickman made me love Reed Richards), I never remember that Marvel Studios has it in active development. And, the director choice is why.

I don’t even think we need to see it per se. Into the Spider-Verse had a good model for acknowledging the Ben of it all without showing a full origin story. We just need something beyond the innuendo of Civil War (which was a good conversation, but not enough).

I sometimes think about how, in the actual Watts films, the closest Peter gets to mentioning Ben is when he hints to Ganke, I mean Ned, that May (not Peter himself) has had a vague hard time recently.

I can't say I don't understand why people don't like the absence of Uncle Ben, but me personally, after so many retellings of the same origin story, I'm actually pretty okay with it not being rehashed for a billionth time. I find a new approach to the character to be refreshing. But I appreciate people have different opinions on this.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

watched a fan edit of ASM1 last night and goddamn, just reinstating a few deleted scenes (and using the alternate versions of Ben's death and Lizard's escape from the school) improves that movie out of sight. the theatrical edit really messed up the pacing so much, as well as losing all the character work that makes Curt so compelling, and Dr. Ratha just disappearing midway through the movie with no explanation

And if they had rehashed all the same origin story beats again they would’ve gotten crucified for “not doing anything new” with the character. For some people, they can never win. I appreciate the experimentation.

  25. I don’t think anyone is asking for a rehash of the origin story. I’m fine never seeing Ben or Batman’s parents die on screen ever again. But ignoring the Ramifications of those events and how it shapes the character/man is the issue, not the act of retelling. (And in this case the substitute being … bad.)
