I really liked goofy Toby too. I feel like the first two will/maybe have already go down as classics.
I will never be able to understand anyone liking Tobey in the Spider-Man films outside of either nostalgia or laughing at how bad he was. When I rewatched those three films over the past year, a lot stood out as better than I remembered, but he was truly worse than I remembered. No charm, and no range. I don't have much exposure to him outside of these films, so I don't know if that's his fault, but man, everything good about those films is weighed down by that horrible lead performance. As for Kirsten, she's a good actress and wasn't written well, but her performance was still bad. Better than Tobey's, but still bad in a way that went beyond the script. Maybe Raimi's direction pushed her that way? I don't know. I definitely feel like someone could've risen above the material, but whether her doing or out of her control, she did not.
What's funny is that I find tobey to be a highlight in sm3. Just the concept of this total loser trying to be a bad boy cracked me up.
Right now yes. It still hasn't opened in China, and it's just a prediction, but it's expected to make 80-100 mil there
This article is a couple years old, and if I recall correctly, Marvel had more to do with this than Sony did. (Also, technically it says that "Peter Pqrker" has to be white, not "Spider-Man," but that's still very dumb, so whatever.) Oh, and outside of the terrible rules limiting Sony's ability to make Spidey more inclusive, the best part is this: "he gains his powers while attending either middle school or college." In every comic book and film version, he doesn't get his powers in middle school or college, but rather in high school. Traditionally at 15 years old to be exact. (Miles gets his at 13.) So, good job with that.
In shear numbers, it's highly unlikely this gains $140 million+ it needs to bypass Spider-Man 3. It might on net profit though due to the lower budget, but the first trilogy made way more than it seems due to inflation though.
$75 million opening weekend in China. Almost at $800 million worldwide. It could pass SM3 Edit: It now has over $800 million worldwide. Definitely going to beat WW for the biggest summer film.
I don't think you really have to debate numbers because inflation and number of screens affects it all. People liked this way more than a Tobey Maguire dance party against That 70's Venom. Even on the numbers front, Spider-Man 3 cost $83 million more than Spider-Man: Homecoming... and that doesn't even factor in the inflation. The efficiency there, with a much more likable product, is the most convincing part of this debate, whether it does come out as the "top grossing" film for the character or not. We all know it won't matter when the sequel hits.
I completely forgot about those two. For some reason I thought WW was the current highest film for the summer.
I think SM3's box office success can be mostly attributed to the success and love for SM2, box office isn't an indicator of quality at all.
