I mean, it is kind of a really nice story and Don Glover had a part in it. The concept of a black Spider-Man was first discussed a few months before the November 2008 election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Axel Alonso describes the catalyst, "When we were planning “Ultimatum,” we realized that we were standing at the brink of America electing its first African-American President and we acknowledged that maybe it was time to take a good look at one of our icons."[5] This new Spider-Man was considered a possible part of the 2008-09 "Ultimatum" story arc that restructured much of the Ultimate Marvel universe, but those early thoughts were abandoned because the story for that character had not yet been developed.[5] Bendis said thoughts about the character were further reinforced by African American actor Donald Glover's appearance wearing Spider-Man pajamas in "Anthropology 101", the second season premiere of the television comedy series Community. This was a reference to an unsuccessful online campaign that attempted to secure Glover an audition for the lead role in the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man. Bendis said of Glover, "I saw him in the costume and thought, 'I would like to read that book.' So I was glad I was writing that book."[6] The first appearance of Miles Morales as Spider-Man, from Ultimate Fallout #4 (August 2011) When the Marvel Comics staff decided that the Ultimate universe's Peter Parker would be killed in the 2011 storyline "Death of Spider-Man", the character Miles Morales was created.[6] Although Morales is the first black Spider-Man, he marks the second time a Latino character has taken the Spider-Man identity. Miguel O'Hara, who is of half Mexican descent, was the title character in the series Spider-Man 2099.[7] Morales has replaced Parker as Spider-Man only in Ultimate Marvel, a parallel universe that re-imagines the characters. Miles Morales was created by comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli.[5][8] Morales was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, the 13-year-old[9] son of an African American father and a Puerto Rican mother. Axel Alonso has described Miles as an intelligent nerd with an aptitude for science similar to his predecessor, Peter Parker.[5][10] The character made his debut in the fourth issue of the Ultimate Fallout limited series, which was released on August 3, 2011. He later starred in the relaunchedUltimate Comics: Spider-Man series, written by Bendis and drawn by Pichelli, in September 2011.[6][11][12]
Would be cool to see him in more prominent roles. His scenes in The Martian were some of my favorite, however small they were.
Magic Mike XXL is one of the best movies of the last few years, my personal favorite of last year. It's the most I've enjoyed any output of Glover's in any medium since Community.
One of the best of the last few years? That's a big statement considering it's a Channing Tatum stripper movie. I may watch this on HBO go tonight.
There's nothing that says in the movie universe Miles Can't be older. It's a longshot, but I'd love to see Glover in that kind of role. (Also I desperately want the black and red suit.)
Marvel is going to cater to comic fans before fans of a show that has been canceled on multiple occasions.
Young Peter is tired and boring. Young Miles is the only Miles so far. Miles being a novice is significant for the character. If they're not using him out the gate like I wanted, they should wait until Peter graduates so he can mentor Miles, and so they can prolong young Spider-Men without rebooting. I would take Glover as Prowler, though. Make him the original version, but make him Miles' uncle like the Ultimate version is. It'd be a good set-up for down the road, plus that'd be a fun dynamic for these films. In the meantime, let's get Silk in one of these films PLEASE.
Yeah Donald as Prowler and Miles' uncle, and thereby an extension of the campaign for him to be Spider-Man, would be really great. An active Aaron Davis as Prowler would be an awesome tease for comic book fans suggesting that Miles also exists somewhere in this world.
I could hug you right now. Yes. And the fact that Prowler plays Spidey in the All New universe makes it work too.
