Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7, 2017) Movie • Page 71

Discussion in 'Entertainment Forum' started by jkauf, Apr 13, 2016.

  1. I enjoyed this a lot. It was funny and exciting, and Tom Holland was endearing. It actually has a decent villain, which is nice for an MCU/superhero film. Not a huge fan of the high-tech suit. Seemed way overdone. Also, being beholden to the MCU prevented this from really standing out. Still, I really liked it and would probably rank it #5 or #6 in the MCU.

No idea how it compares to the other Spider-Man films for me. Haven't seen them in years.

If the animated Sony Spidey does well I wonder if Sony will include Miles in their spinoffs.

I still feel like a live-action Miles won't happen for another decade. We'll get this high school trilogy, and then we'll get a little bit of college Peter, and then Marvel and/or Sony will get itchy for another high school Spidey, at which point they'll bring in Miles for a new high school trilogy (perhaps with Peter in a mentor role; perhaps introducing Miles would also make them finally willing to commit to some married Peter).

I don't think these movies are really ever going to be great for me so you can take my opinions with a grain of salt but this was pretty mediocre to poor.

All of the MCU integration stuff was awful, why is Peter now just like Iron Man Jr. (I'm sort of kidding but his obsession with Stark/The Avengers was over the top).

The Peter Parker stuff was mostly good when they actually bothered to flesh out any character moments (which they hardly did). I agree with whoever posted earlier that none of the characters exist except to help or interact with Peter. I get that he's the protagonist, but they were hardly given any real personality (except for Ned). That's not necessarily an issue, I just think I was excited to see a more ensemble-esque film than I got.

The Aunt May is hot jokes were so gross and show just how fucked mainstream filmmaking will continue to be, even while it makes strides in other areas.

This was one of the most visually dull MCU films yet, they barely took any time to capture the city of New York (probably because they filmed so much of it in Atlanta, and understandably wanted to save $$$).

That being said, there were some nice moments. Holland is a good presence, very likable and managed to emote when needed (the scenes with Liz, the scene on the beach, in the car with Keaton). All of the kids were great, Keaton was one of the better MCU villains, and even though I could've done without so many MCU tie-ins, Jon Favreau is always a joy.

I have more gripes about it, but a lot of my issues have already been laid out or are just issues re: the MCU in general and have been spoken about ad nauseam.

One last thing, the music supervision on this was near Suicide Squad levels of bad. "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" ? "The Underdog" ? These are great songs (some of my favorites), but they've been used to death in films and television. And finally, jesus christ I would love to never hear "Blitzkrieg Bop" in a high school/teen movie ever again.

Anyway this is a long rant, I wish I liked this as much as others here, as Spidey has always been my favorite superhero, but this didn't really get there for me.

  7. I haven't seen this yet but it's a bummer to hear all the comments about it being stylistically bland as I thought Cop Car showed a lot of promise. Fuggin Disney/Marvel

I would be so happy if he just shows up during Infinity War in a new suit with no tech and much more self confidence, haha.

I normally don't find anything of note in YouTube criticism, but this nails a lot of my thoughts on Homecoming/The MCU/Spidey on the big screen:

Paraphrasing there, but that was probably my favorite scene haha.

Yeah I saw it again and like it more than the first time. This is the only forum where I'm seeing people post a lot of criticism towards the film. I don't know anyone IRL that thinks it was anything less than awesome.

Same to be honest, it's weird. I saw it with a friend who is, well, "that guy" with movies, i.e. rips everything with any sort of pop appeal, or light hearted tone to shreds, and he loved this movie. I think there's just something weird how in this forum, Rami's films haven't been good enough (aside from what seems to be a fairly agreed upon love of S2), Webbs films weren't good enough, and now this incarnation isn't good enough. I absolutely loved this film, honestly can't wait until the sequel comes out.

I just think every Spider-Man film so far has had some significant issues. I still really enjoy all of them but Spider-Man is my favourite comic book character, he should have my favourite comic book film and none of them are anywhere close.

I just opened up some Spider-Man to continue reading and found myself on this issue:

    IMG_9028.JPG

Can you believe how much his origin got retold!? Not like a quick throwback to what made Peter become Spider-Man has any relevance to his motivations or internal conflict or anything...

I really have enjoyed reading the criticisms for this movie in here. I don't agree with them all but damn am I bothered by this spider sense not existing.

Plus almost everyone who had negative crisiticim still said they liked this movie/it was good.

Small complaint but I do wish Peter felt more like a New Yorker (which was also a problem I had with the ASM series)
