  1. Just in respect to the movie feeling kind of scatterbrained. Felt a little too similar to ASM2 to me in a few ways.

Movie was alright, not top 3 marvel movie, but definitely top 3 Spider-Man. I don't know who Zendaya is but she was definitely the dumbest character in the movie. I didn't find her funny at all nor was she a very good actress. I guess it also didn't help that people were on the verge of crying with laughter every time she said something.

After thinking about this movie and fully digesting it, I liked it a lot but I have a decent amount of problems with it.

  8. Overall I'm sure I'm just being picky about this movie but there wasn't much about it that makes me want to do a rewatch.

Most other MCU movies have that one scene that even if the rest of the movie isn't perfect, they make watching it worth it for that scene. IE the finale of Avengers, Nick Fury car chase in Winter Soldier, Ant Mans first time in the suit etc. Tgis didn't have that for me.

i chuckled, but wow that's not what I stay until the end of the credits to see (a mildly funny joke). If there was another one after that I'd be happier but we essietially got nothing :tear:

    So assuming that this weekend...

As someone who works with young people (I'm a middle school teacher) I felt as if the ways in which the kids behaved in this film is pretty close to what you get from your average high schooler in 2017.

Because my cousin said it might be. And he's dived deep into that kinda stuff
Is it supposed to be a high school movie?

I loved it. Especially because Evans wants out of that suit. I joked with my cousin who loves Cap that he only did that because they would count it as one of his movies left on contract

It's trying to blend the genres between high school movies and superhero movies. John Huges homages, high school dances, crushes, homework, detentions. Tonally and plot-wise it is intentionally drawing from 80s high school movies. It's pretty far from measuring up to what it's trying to be.

I doubt it. It seems like they are trying to build in the sinister six so I would expect another new member to show up in the sequel.

I'm fine with Aunt May's age in the film. Makes sense with Peter being 15 to have an aunt that is 50 and not 70. She's not his grandmother.

I was really glad they chose "Space Age Love Song" as the exemplary '80s homecoming song. Underrated tune.

I've had fun staying out of this thread the past couple weeks, not to avoid spoilers (which I actively sought out online leading up to the release), but to avoid some Chorus users' responses to the film. With how much I enjoy the eternal Spidey film debates here, lol, I wanted to put my thoughts together before seeing others' thoughts.

Well, in brief, I generally loved this film and feel like it largely nailed everything a young Spider-Man film should be, but the complaints that I have are pretty big complaints.

All of the high school stuff was fantastic. I straight-up loved the humor and charm of all the students and teachers. People who have discussed Spidey with me know I'm in the minority that greatly prefers adult Peter to high school Peter, but they nailed the school stuff so well that I'm honestly really excited about two more films of this. Zendaya as Michelle was particularly wonderful in every scene she had; hopefully she plays a bigger role in the sequel (which seemed implied by her last scene in the film). Only character I was mixed on was Flash, but the whole kid who thinks he's cooler than he is angle does feel like classic Flash in a way.

Michael Keaton as Vulture was great, almost to a fault. What I mean by that is, it's really hard to view him as the villain and not a working-class victim of Tony Stark's bourgeois ego. (Between this, Ultron, and Civil War, Tony has a LOT to atone for, which is part of why I hope he gets a heroic death in Avengers 4.) Thank goodness they kept Toomes alive and gave him a redemptive moment in the mid-credits scene. The whole pre-Homecoming father reveal was wonderful. Also, I continued to love his look.

Speaking of costumes, Peter's was every bit as obnoxious as I expected, maybe even more. There was enough legit humor mined from the suit that I didn't get that mad during the film, but man, what a stupid choice. They should've used Peter turning down Tony's offer (which should've just been fully the Iron Spider) as the chance for him to just make his own, instead of the main suit getting returned at the end. As funny as Karen was at times, a suit that high tech takes away so much of what makes Spidey so special.

Also, a couple of the comedic beats, while great in a vacuum, really hurt the film contextually. I'm referring to Toomes accidentally vaporizing someone and Spidey's suit having a kill mode. I laughed at both, but neither should've been in the film. With the Toomes that the film established, an accidental murder should've had emotional weight, not humor. And, why the heck would Tony include a kill mode in a suit he gave to a 15-year-old!? *sigh*

Still, as much as the overly high tech suit weighed down the Spidey scenes, there was a lot in there that I totally loved. The friendly neighborhood scenes in the beginning were charming in the same way that the similar scenes were in ASM2. Spidey not having any buildings to swing from was a wonderful tribute to the 80s Peter David story "Here Cometh the Commuter." The way that they used ASM #33's iconic rubble-lifting sequence was genuinely intense and compelling. Also love that they worked Vulture, 2 Shockers, Prowler, Tinkerer, and Scorpion into this film; hopefully the sequels find a way to fit in Boomerang and/or Mysterio.

Overall, if the costume had been different, I think this would easily be my new favorite Spidey film. As is, it still might be, but the Webb films still have easily the overall best old school Spidey in costume sequences. I'm excited for what comes next, but I really hope the next two Avengers films find a way to set the stage for a better Spidey film in 2019. The animated Miles film is still on track to be the best Spidey film by a mile.

Also, this 100% was a Miles Morales film with Peter thrown in. No excuse for them to demand high school Peter again.

Because Tony is the worst. And in the words of Toomes, the real villain.
