Well he's 15 in this franchise. In Raimi's, Parker is almost graduated. With Garfield, he was probably 17 and we see him graduate in the second movie. They definitely went with a less mature, wide-eyed PP here. I thought it was refreshing. They have to mature him going forward. It's a one-note performance, like you mentioned, that IMO works here but will be less endearing if it continues.

  3. He's 15 and his uncle still died, ostensibly in part because of Peter. (Unless that just didn't happen in the MCU, which would be an interesting choice, but I just assumed they didn't tell us cause we all know the story.). But even then, there's usually a different tone Peter has when he's with friends, family, as Spider-Man, and with just regular ol people. To me it was always a little bit of darkness that helped ground Peter and act as a counter-weight to when the mask goes on. (How he lights up when he puts on the costume after class hints at this, but it's mostly because he wants to be Tony Stark, impress him, and finds it fun. Versus any inner feeling of doing the right thing/responsibility. The big motivation was not letting Stark down, which I didn't really like. But I didn't find the overuse of "this is the most amazing thing I've ever seen!" joke/line that enduring. I coulda gone for a little more character building, understanding who PP and SM is, and why he feels compelled to use his powers for good.

(The more I think about it the more this movie just flat out shoulda been Miles. Just replace PP with Miles and it works exactly the same if not bettter. Make Ganke and Miles roommates in basically the same school.)

I'm glad Parker was the SM for the MCU. Tom Holland is literally Spider-Man brought to life. He was born for this role. Though, after PP story is done I definitely think Miles should be Spidey, but I'm not in a rush to see Peter leave soon.

  5. The Audi product placement scene I coulda done without as well. The car driving was I guess kinda funny.

He played it pretty damn close to Miles tho. The entire motivation, playfulness, looking up to the bigger heros, banter with Ganke, etc., that has been pretty Miles. You could have changed the name from Peter to Miles and it woulda worked just fine with this script. Which makes me question the writing of Peter himself. It was an odd amalgamation of the characters. A new version of Peter. (It's a fine mashup, it just means Miles woulda worked too.)

  7. Also the Washington Monument is about 555' tall. I thought Ant Man was portrayed as about that size for some reason ... the "woah I'm so high up" thing felt strange. I missed that the first time cause I was eyerolling at the timing of the alien bomb and how convenient that whole plot device was.

  8. Sure woulda sucked if the alien bomb just blew up while they were sitting around looking at a holographic tracker in their bedroom.

They did say it needed to be activated by radiation and it only went off after going through the x-ray scanner, but I also don't think that logic held through with the other times those power sources were used so it's still dumb.

And I totally agree with you on the Miles thing. I still think this movie should have brought back Andrew Garfield with a Death of Peter Parker storyline and introduced Miles so they could pass on the mantle for the future movies. That way it's still a new Spidey for the new MCU era and you get the legacy of Peter which is so important to Miles.

  10. Heh, yeah I'd think there's lots of radiation around that shoulda been triggering it all the time. Especially in the lab. Or a microwave. Haha. Or Tom Holland's pomade.

I'm ok with this being MCU Peter all in all. I like him. I think Tom portrayed this version just fine. It's just that I think it's *a* version of Peter, and not "the" version, and that a lot of the characteristics made me think of Miles in how it was written. Which made me think: if this was just Miles instead, does this work? And I think it does with very little change. Just a thought in how they wrote this Peter and where I think it went. It's very much a different take on the character that incorporates a bunch of other characters and versions of both Peter and others that have donned the mask.

I agree with yah too. But I don't think Marvel would actually kill off a big name character.

The only problem is that Garfield wasn't in Civil War

  12. So we get that Peter filmed the entire battle in CW. And he fantasizes about that and is super happy and wants that life. Ok. So when he's watching the footage of the battle later it looks like the interface is YouTube. Did he upload that? Is it someone else's footage? Who's? Why? Ha.

That was a pretty good way to do a "this is what happened last time" thing at the start.

  13. I already talked about how generic and plastic the score was. But I wanna also say the soundtracked songs I sorta hated. Fine with the Ramones just not being movie music anymore. Let alone twice. Also fine with no more mid credit scenes. The end title animation was pretty cool though, reminded me of Deadpool. Animated music theme throwback at the start was also awesome.

  14. The new Jet song is so fucking bad.

I hope Peter gets to throw on the Iron-Spider costume that was shown at the end as well. Either in Infinity War or it's sequel.

I thought it was weird how it was all older music, like I love 80s music and understanding they were going for a John Hughes vibe but that Homecoming dance would have been playing Migos or whatever, I think they did the same thing on Riverdale too

  17. Q: Why are we calling that the iron spider costume? No legs and wrong color. Same spider design as many other costumes.

  18. I liked Riverdales music choices better to be honest. (Gimme all that synth.) I also just don't like the Ramones much. Haha. I watched 'Pretty in Pink' last night, and the songs are just better choices if you wanna go that way. It felt weird to me.

Scenarios are pretty similar from the past Spider-man movie what makes it special is they added a little side of comedy in this film. I must say that it comes fresh and entertaining, Tom Holland give justice to this well-known character.

  21. Unpopular opinion I know. But I don't. They're fine. They're important. They sell lots of merch. I just never liked 'um. Smiths, the Cure, the Clash ... all more my jam and with way better songs. I'd never sit down and listen to a Ramones record.

Tony Stark made it for him and it has a somewhat identical spider emblem that is gold. The suit doesn't have to look 100% like the comic suit. I don't think any MCU suit is an exact replica of the comic.

It's refreshing to see an MCU film in high school because it's a perspective different from every other MCU film. But it doesn't do anything particularly fresh or interesting with its high school dynamics/setting. John Hughes and Amy Heckerling films had fully fleshed out, nuanced characters. This movie painted in broad strokes and only really cared about Peter. It's a competent superhero movie. It's a bland high school movie.
