Looking like this will make $117 million this weekend. That's actually $30 million behind GOTG. I think it'll likely do a lot better in the foreign markets than GOTG, but that number is kinda underwhelming for the domestic gross.

    Might be Spider-Man...

It was projected to make 80-100 million, and did 117.....

And isn't it the second highest Spider-Man opening?

Projections are always conservative. Too bad the Big Sick couldn't pull off the upset.

Did you really think a movie that hasn't opened wide yet would beat Spider-Man?

No haha. It was a joke. Even if it had opened wide, an independent romantic comedy wasn't beating a Marvel movie anywhere but in my wildest fantasies.

I really hope a theater closer to me gets The Big Sick next weekend.

I was looking at it more as a franchise. Spider-Man is the #1 money maker for Marvel, in terms of merchandise. While the projections were low, I'm sure Disney was looking for a bigger grab week 1. To give it some perspective, the first week draws for the other films:

    SM 2002: $115 million ($160 adjusted)
    SM2 2004: $116 million ($153 adjusted)
    SM3 2007: $151 million ($182 adjusted)
    ASM 2012: $62 million
    ASM2 2014: $91 million

Admittedly, before looking up the ASM films, I didn't know they were received that poorly.

There was a scene in the 2nd trailer of Liz and Peter kissing at the dance. Seems like some time got cut from the dance. More time for him to get there, I guess? Maybe Vulture let him know to meet there when they were on the way to the dance. Hard to gauge how far they traveled. Maybe Vulture has Shocker tail him for safety so he wasn't far away. Him being there didn't bother me and isn't too big a stretch of the imagination. Him being specifically outside the door Peter ran out of certainly was convenient.

Found out there's a comic shop next to my girlfriend's work and found all 5 issues of the Spider-Men crossover, among others. Pretty stoked to flip through 'em.

This was really fun. I'd have to see it again to get a sense of where I'd place this in the MCU.

I'm not usually the kinda guy to see a movie twice, but I'm almost positive I'll be returning to the theater soon for this one :P

That's $30 million less than Guardians 2. One of the mot anticipated CBM sequels ever. I don't see how $117 is underwhelming considering it beat expectations of less than $100

Just got out of seeing this. About to ramble through a bunch of thoughts. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Great cast. Had no clue Logan Marshall-Green was going g to be in this. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. And Bokeem Woodbine hasn't aged a bit in like 20 years. If you filmed his scenes for The Rock today, I wouldn't be able to tell a difference. It was nice to see Gwyneth Paltrow back. I did not think the actress who played Liz was convincing at all. Her relationship with Peter felt so forced and I didn't feel and chemistry between the two of them at all. Neat that Jennifer Connely's (Paul Bettany's / Jarvis' wife) voice was used for Karen. Thoughts on the new and improved Spidey Suit that was briefly showcased at the end? Thought it was interesting choice not rehashing Uncle Ben's
plot line. Really enjoyed how they tied in his role in Captain America: Civil War. Tom Holland, 21, playing a 15 year old. Updating Flash to represent a more modern bully felt smart. Those Captain America detention and PE videos were hilarious.

Surprisingly, I didn't like Donald Glover in this (even in just a few scenes). The voice/character he plays just didn't feel right. Did he get this role because of all those years of Internet insistence that he play Spidey?

Expectations =/= studio desires tho. Batman vs. Superman beat expectations but the studio still saw it as a disappointment.

From a consumer side, it is excellent. From the studio side, they were probably looking at a larger take. It's going to make back production and marketing budget, without a doubt. And I'm sure the merchandising is going to be huge, as it always is.

I'm not trying to argue that it was a bad draw or anything. Kevin Feige is still going to swim in cash.

    Assume It's A Bit

I've seen it 3 times now. It's definitely the best Spider-Man movie, and it's up there as one of the best MCU movies. In that top 3 area with Iron Man and Civil War for me.

    Pros:
Acting was great across the board for the most part. Peter and Ned's chemistry was just fantastic.
    Genuinely hilarious
    Rubble scene
Vulture is the best MCU villain since Loki
    Washington Monument Scene

    Cons:
Cinematography was a little stale. Not really bad, but too similar to the rest of the MCU
Same kind of goes for the score. Nothing exceptional, but it was serviceable.
Liz was really just a love interest. Not much to her, unfortunately.
Some of the scenes with Vulture felt a little off tonally. When he killed Shocker #1, he played it off as a joke for some reason? No need for that. Let him be menacing for a minute.

This thread sucks and gives me anxiety lol. I really liked the first two Rami movies even though they haven’t aged super well. Loved Homecoming. The rest I wasn’t a fan of.

Homecoming is so perfect to me, having grown up obsessed with Spidey I really feel that they managed to stay so true to the spirit of the original character and story. Despite changing so much from the original source material, they have managed to be the closest adaptation yet. Love, love, loved it.
