MJ and Gwen are both kinda not treated great in both series which is a huge bummer. I hope more comes of the love interest in Homecoming.

Holland is easily the best PP and SM to me though maybe that'll change with time and more viewings but I've seen it twice now and I think he's wonderful

It's A Secret To Everyone Prestigious

3 hours til i'm in the theater and i'm excited

rewatching the first two Raimi Spider-Man films really hit me in the face with how much youthful nostalgia played into how much i liked the earlier trilogy. case in point; i recall either me or my brother walking out of SM2, being asked how we liked the movie by our dad and referring to it as "the bomb" (dear god why did we talk like that)

but there was really so much corniness/cheese in the acting of the first two SM films that it really changed my perspective on them critically

But see, I was like, 6 when SM1 came out and it was my first exposure to superheroes really, but I still think those movies are horrifically bad.

I loved this. This felt like the closest they've gotten to the Spider-Man I grew up with the cartoons. Tom Holland is easily the best Peter Parker.

This was an enjoyable Spider-Man story.

Most importantly, it felt emotionally and thematically like Spider-Man. Being Spider-Man is hard and fucks with everything he wants. Spider-Man lets down his friends and family and himself constantly, despite all the good he does and all his good intentions, and this movie had that aspect down pretty well, though some of the instances didn't feel as consequential as they could have (his friend forgets about being left alone at the party very quickly, that could have been a really emotional turn/arc if he was getting just as bullied and berated as Peter, and if he was truly pissed at Peter about it he could have been more than a quippy side-kick. Same with Liz just moving at the end, the fallout from Peter leaving her at the dance happens so fast and... nothing really happens, dramatically). But it still did a lot of Spider-Man things really well.

As a film, it was alright. Fun action, but like most Marvel movies the whole thing is starting to feel same-y to me. Partially because they insist on filming everything the same way in all their movies, color correcting the same way, framing the same way, and it's just all so lacking in visual personality, even if it looks good.

The humor didn't hit me the way it hit most of my audience. I appreciated maybe half the jokes, laughed at maybe two, and found the other half falling flat. My theater was howling during the scene before Homecoming where Peter is at Liz's and interacting with Michael Keaton, and while it was definitely played for comedy, I found it so tonally off. He murdered someone in cold blood. He stated his intent to murder Spider-Man. It should feel tense, but the comedic beats in the scene took away from that, as did the audience cackling around me. Might just be me, but that scene played weird. Also, maybe too many jokes. Michael Keaton incinerating that guy and then saying "I thought this was the anti-gravity gun" or whatever is a dark joke that undercuts Keaton's presence as an intimidating villain, since he didn't actually mean to kill the guy, but then plays weird because even though he didn't, it didn't seem to bother him at all, and then he's supposed to be a family man who's doing all this for his wife and daughter and protects Peter's identity in the after-credits scene? Keaton's Vulture didn't land 100% for me.

I did love Tom Holland. He's just a great Spider-Man. He talks a lot and rushes into things and means well and fucks up and plays it all so well, and the recreation of the If This Be My Destiny scene under all the rubble was the most vulnerable and despondent and desperate performance I've seen from a Marvel lead in awhile, that I can remember. Though the RDJ voice-over was too much and took away from what was already a pretty on-the-nose scene as he's staring his reflection in the puddle, half obscured by the Spidey mask.

I enjoyed the homages to Raimi's Spider-Man 2. I had a good time. Ultimately it felt pretty breezy and inconsequential, like most Marvel movies.

Oh, I absolutely hate the MJ reveal immediately on the heels of Liz saying she's moving. It treats Peter Parker's love interests like a revolving door.

I thought this was pretty great. I really liked that Peter was in his homemade suit for the final battle.

    Holland kills this role.

I wish there were some way to see films like this in seclusion. The people next to me were explaining every shoehorned easter egg to each other. Some kid was shouting every line after he heard them. The person behind me wouldn't cover their mouth when sneezing. The only good crowd reaction was the collective gasp at the reveal of who Toomes was.

I enjoyed this a ton. ASM had me cringing a lot. This one felt right.

Stinger was p good. Much respect for that. Mid-credit scene felt like a waste.

So is the guys on the outside line from the mid-credits scene supposed to be teasing the Sinister Six or am I reading too much into that?

I thought it was just ok. I loved the Spider-Man portions, but hated all the MCU stuff that felt forced in to constantly remind the audience it's 1 universe now. Tony Stark literally created Ultron and yet is lecturing on how to be a responsible hero acting holier than thou to Peter. Ned was also really bad. I think it was really close to becoming great, but the non Spider-Man elements really held it back.

How well do they explain the events of Civil War and Spider-Man's role in it for somebody that hasn't seen it? I saw CW but most of my family didn't and I'll be going with them, so this will be their introduction to MCU Spider-Man

Okay, just got home. Don't feel like making tags so I will be super general.

Overall, I enjoyed it. It was clearly a Marvel movie, which gets you the good and the bad. But Keaton was one of the better Marvel villains in a hot minute. It was a lot of fun, set some stuff up for the future, and ultimately, it gave us a pretty great Spider-Man. It's 1am here, I'll probably post more thoughts and details tomorrow.

Probably the best a movie could be with 6 credited writers.

Saw the movie tonight, I'm very confident this was the best Spider-Man movie.

The scene with Peter stuck under the rubble was the most vulnerable I've ever seen a young hero. It really got to me, way more than I expected this movie to. I could've gone without the Stark voiceover, but the scene still really hit home for me.

Yeah, I'll just echo the general sentiments in here. Lot of good, definitely some bad, but pretty comfortably the most solid Spider-Man flick we've seen. They set up things really well moving forward, and I'm happy that this Holland version of the Spider-Man universe is the future.
