Makes sense. If they really want 3 films set in high school, with the way that time typically passes in the MCU, they gotta push these out. Plus, 2019 currently only has Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 as far as MCU films go, so they can squeeze in a third film.
With releases that close, I wonder if they'll follow real years and have Peter jump from sophomore year to senior or something in SM2.
Every time I see the bridge scene in the trailer, I can't help but to think of Captain America pulling that helicopter in No. 3.
They claim that their intent is to have a Harry Potter-style approach, with a trilogy of films set in three consecutive years of high school, but that's part of what I find so puzzling. Maybe the MCU will slow down, but if they keep taking place roughly in real time, then the Spider-Man films will be off, especially since this one seems to pick up almost immediately after Civil War. I'm excited about bringing Spidey into the MCU and all, but if they stick by the high school trilogy plan and Marvel's films keep moving in real time, things will get real messy. All of the films between now and Avengers 4 COULD reasonably take place within a single year, though. Hm. Soon, the movie timeline is gonna get as wonky as comic book timelines, lol.
I keep seeing people post that Angourie Rice is Gwen Stacy. Has anyone seen anything that confirms this?
Her role is still officially unspecified, but some sources are saying that she's Betty Brant. Maybe she'll end up having that name and dating Ned Leeds, even though these versions are clearly quite different from the comics characters of the same names.
The only way you could make Carnage a worthy villain for. a Spider-Man film, is to completely and utterly change his character. He's the Gambit of Spider-Man, useless character made popular by some appearances in the 90's and a cool design.
I don't know, there's something about a psychopathic serial killer with no empathy at all that makes for a rather terrifying villain. He cannot be reasoned with or predicted, which ups the fear and sense of danger to me. Heck, I've seen a few Joker comparisons around the web (although I don't know that I'd go that far).
I wouldn't quite use the Joker comparison, but it also wouldn't be a stretch of the character to do him like that. The right actor in that role could kill it. (I said this earlier, but if the studio is willing to genderswap, Ruth Wilson would be excellent.) But, I still stand by the idea that some stories benefit from a more one-dimensional yet truly terrifying threat. A Venom film that tells Eddie Brock's origin would be the best place for Carnage. Show Eddie's backstory, have him get the symbiote and fight Spider-Man (who'd be in a supporting role), and then have Carnage come along in the third act for Spidey and Venom to team up against. It wouldn't matter if Carnage is nuanced or if Spidey has much screen time dedicated to him 'cause the central narrative would center around Eddie. (Or, alternatively, you wanna get REAL crazy, leave Cletus out of it and have Spider-Man become Carnage/Spider-Carnage in the third act! After Eddie's initial HATE of Spidey and Spidey's attempts to help him, all of a sudden the dynamic would switch to Eddie trying to help Peter.) It's all what you do with the character.
That doesn't make a compelling villain. I don't think he's anything like Joker. He's more of a Killer Croc or Victor Zsasz. Joker is a criminal mastermind, Kassidy is just a serial killer. As a secondary villain, sure you could make some great looking setpieces, but as a main villain he would be awful. He just doesn't have the depth, if you want that depth, you go Venom. As a force of nature villain, he wouldn't fit in to a Spider-Man film and certainly not an MCU Spider-Man film, unless you go the Malekith route. Possibly a Venom film but you would need to build the whole film around everything else and just have him come in last minute. Basically when Spider-Man has such a compelling and varied rogues gallery using Carnage would be a massive misstep. Also Carnage is boring as fuck.
You'd have to. One bad thing about the symbiotes is I could see a very easy way for the film makers to do yet another fodder army of symbiotes.
I find it interesting when there are villains that are just pure evil and do bad just for the sake of being bad (The Joker, Kid Buu, Carnage). It's a nice change from villains that get bullied or don't get things their way in life and turn bad.
What's complex/compelling about the Joker? Does he even have a backstory? But I agree that I wouldn't want him as main villain, but yeah, him in a Venom film would be awesome. I'd love to see them battle it out.
Unfortunately Joker does have a backstory The Killing Joke. It's a fine back story for him but the treatment of Barbara is criminal. I still am not sure what I'd want for the next incarnation of Venom on the big screen, you'd kinda have to have him as a Spidey villain and then a redemption arc in a solo film? Or say fuck it and make him Agent Venom and a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
As much as I'd get a kick out of a Venom Bomb in an Avengers film, yeah, another fodder army wouldn't be ideal. So does Ned Leeds. They're definitely taking liberties with the characters they're taking names from. Agent Venom pre-GOTG is the best Venom by far, but with Flash Thompson in high school, they'd be better off starting with Eddie Brock. I think you could get a really good film out of Eddie's origin and redemptive arc with him instead of Peter as the protagonist. Then they could do some Lethal Protector-type stories in future films, or end that first film with the military getting a hold of the symbiote; maybe by the time they get to a second Venom film, Flash Thompson would have time to enroll in the military and lose his legs.
Interesting that they are sticking with he Homecoming name for the sequel if that turns out to be the case.
I'm sure the sequel will have it's own subtitle. and as for venom, I always see people want venom. honestly one of the last characters I want to see. I want to see the sinister six so much more. build up, keep giving us characters we haven't seen before and then seed and bring in ones like otto and norman.
Not quite Homecoming related but of interest - Miles confirmed for the Lord/Miller animated Spidey movie.
Awesome news! Still a little weird they are going to launch an animated movie the same time as a live action, but Miles on top of it being Lord and Miller has me pumped.
Oh, and I guess Lord/Miller are just writing it, makes sense since Han Solo is probably pretty time consuming.
Oh, I didn't mean they were directing. Them writing it is good enough for me. Since it's animated, I would assume whatever they write should stay in the film because you can do anything with animation. It's not like they'd get on set and realize something doesn't work.
