Well the internet is going to have fun with that... That's exactly the role I thought she was going to have. I feel like she'll do a good job.
Yeah, sarcasm aside I'm down with this decision, she'll do a great job. That said, maybe I missed this in the lead up for this movie, but I assume it isn't an origin story, does Gwen Stacy exist in this universe, or will it just be post-Gwen Stacy?
Interesting if they're only calling her "Michelle" as a diversion and this ends up being true. I'm alright with it, but I also kinda hoped she'd be someone else so that we could get a "Face it, Tiger" moment, maybe in a midcredits scene. But, if there was never a chance of that 60s comic book scene being recreated, lol, I accept this MJ with wide-open arms.
I'm worried the racist backlash to this casting will be even more nasty than usual because the place it will be coming from is a bunch of white boys who won't admit that they're more physically attracted to white women than black women. Mary Jane is an iconic girl-next-door/superhero girlfriend that all these guys have a very specific mental image of, and are attracted to. I don't think they'll like that being changed, particularly to a black woman.
I've just never been a fan of her in the comics or the Rami trilogy. I find her to be boring and cliche while Gwen Stacy seems to be more layered and fascinating.
That's the good things about comics. Different people like different characters. I just hope Gwen is placed into the MCU soon so we can get Spider-Gwen.
Yeah I'm excited for this, and kinda looking forward to seeing so many people get angry about it... But I'm worried she's gonna get Leslie Jones level hate for this and that really fucking sucks.
I honestly don't know much about Zendaya. I've heard her sing and that's about it haha. I'm just looking forward to the movie in general. Good on them for aiming for some diversity. Still wish we would get Miles into the MCU, though.
No way. Leslie's abuse was far beyond anything. I don't know if any virgin neck-beards care too much about who plays Mary Jane.
Straight-up, if you think MJ is boring and cliche, you're wrong. Like, read some actual comics with the character. She's nuanced in a way Gwen wasn't back in the day, which is literally why they killed Gwen back in the 70s. I went through a phase where I loved to romanticize Gwen, but for the longest time, the most defining thing she did was die. And, Spider-Gwen is awesome, but she's literally a completely different character than the one Peter dated.
To those wondering, no, I will never stop sharing my needlessly passionate Spider-Man thoughts. I love the character too much not to spew my obsession all over the place. Deal with it. ;)
The struggle between Peter's duties as Spider-Man and his responsibility of being a good friend/partner to Mary Jane was one of the defining conflicts of Spider-Man that I remember.
Pretty much exactly this. I can't help but think that a lot of the Gwen loves come from Emma Stone's performance In the ASM movies and/or how much Peter/certain writers romanticized her.
It's cool and all that MJW will be in the film but I find it a needless change of the appearance of the character but whatever. Just make the movie good.
How can you know if it's needless without at least reading the script? Or the motivation of the makers for making that choice? I am neutral on the news. I have only seen her in the Bad Blood video, apparently. While I do think "white red head" when I think of Mary Jane, I also don't really care that this version won't be that. I look forward to seeing what she does with the role.
