Changed my avatar to the best live action Spidey costume, from the film w/ the best live action Spidey action, 'cause my skepticism towards this one has me feeling nostalgic for what could've been. Rewatched about half of ASM2 tonight & will finish it later this weekend. Still admittedly the most unfocused Spidey film, even more of a tangled mess plot-wise than SM3, but my gosh, I'll obsess over everything it did right, everything it was so close to being, & everything it could've led to, forever. Marc Webb, Andrew Garfield, & Emma Stone had something special that never should've been derailed by trying to compete with, & then joining up with, the Avengers. But, hey, Into the Spider-Verse is better than every other comic book film, & it likely wouldn't exist had ASM2 not faltered, so whatever, I guess. And, Venom rules.
ASM1 had a better story but I would actually prefer to watch ASM2 any day. The VFX were so good and they captured that comic book vibe Spider-Man so well :P
I feel like someone should write "thank u, next," but for live action Spider-Man movies. 'Cause, like, they literally all do something right, but none of them really worked out.
I mean I’ve yet to see a better SM film than Spider-Man 2 with Doc Ock. The great villain, the character development for numerous characters along with Parker, the tension between Harry and Peter, Peter struggling with being a hero and giving it up, the entire train sequence. That’s the top of the ladder for any spider-man film (unless people include Avengers Endgame or Civil War)
The more time that goes by, the fewer positive things I have to say about the Raimi trilogy and the more things I find to like about the ASM movies. I feel like Garfield never got a fair shake at the character when, in all honesty, his portrayal of Peter was great. His chemistry with Stone (which absolutely blows whatever they were trying to do with Peter and MJ in the Raimi movies out of the water), the more modern take on him being a nerd/social outcast (less of a stereotype and more of just someone who kind of slipped through the cracks as far as the high school social hierarchy went), the action etc.
My love for SM2 for what it is has grown a lot in the past year. Still have a lot of complaints about it, more than most people, but what it does well, it does very well. It's just not the movie that gives me that nostalgic comic book & cartoon Spidey feeling.
Doc Ock, followed by Vulture. I also have a soft spot for ASM2's Harry, though I know I'm in the minority there, lol.
I agree about Doc Ock and Vulture. I'm thinking Mysterio is going to be one of the best villains as well. Even if I don't end up being a big fan of the film, I haven't seen or heard anything negative about Gyllenhaal's portrayal, on top of them absolutely nailing the look I think ASM did a pretty good job with Curt Conners, too, even though the CGI model for Lizard looked terrible
Spidey film villain ranking? I think so 1) Vulture 2) Doc Ock 3) Green Goblin (Dafoe) 4) Venom (bring the hate idc) 5) Lizard 6) Green Goblin (ASM2) 7) Sandman 8) New Goblin 9) Electro 10) Rhino
I think it's funny that, for this property that added sympathetic family dynamics to a couple villains, the Lizard's family (which is one of the character's most defining features) was left out. I think they almost included them, & I don't think they would've fit the story they were telling, but that's a dynamic I'd love to see adapted eventually. Honestly, I think he'd be a pretty good fit for Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters. Like, if you lean towards the McFarlane "Torment" end of the spectrum design-wise, you could have a really good Venom villain. Or, maybe even more so a Morbius villain? Though, with the MCU, Venom, & Spider-Verse all successful in their own ways, & Amy Pascal stepping away, who the heck knows what the future holds.
I can't fit my conflicted Spider-Man film opinions into simple rankings, lol. What I will say: Doc Ock is the best. Vulture is up there. ASM2 Harry is underrated. Sandman had a genuinely fantastic transformation sequence that makes me wanna rank him higher. SM3's Venom was bad. Electro was bad. Rhino wasn't bad, & was in fact very fun in his small, hammy role. And, never liked the whole Power Rangers looking Goblin thing Raimi had going on.
My Spidey movie ranking would be: 1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 2. Spider-Man 2 3. The Amazing Spider-Man 4. Spider-Man: Homecoming 5. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 6. Spider-Man 7. Venom 8. Spider-Man 3 3-5 switch around constantly though lol.
I don’t like the Raimi goblin design but i think Willem Dafoe was excellent casting. Sandman was great in Spider-Man 3 and while that movie has a lot of problems that make it easily the worst to me, I don’t think it gets enough credit for everything it did right.
Into the Spider-Verse is in its own category. It's way too perfect to be compared to basically any other comic book property adaptation, period. My favorite live action Spidey film, again, is ASM2. The next tier for me is SM2 & ASM; if we count Venom, it's probably here, too.
