i'll be lame and say i'd pick spider-verse and both mcu's probably

  2. Gun to head ... Far From Home and Amazing 1 I think. I don’t like FFh very much, but those originals don’t hold up well for me either. And amazing is flawed but underrated at this point.

  3. Rewatching the first Amazing Spider-Man made me realize that it's a lot better than I remember. Definitely flawed but I think they had a pretty good direction to go in. Also iffy on the suit for the first Amazing but the suit in Amazing 2 is fantastic.

Forgot about Civil War, lol. Um, I like it a lot more than Infinity War & a fair bit less than Endgame; the bit wasn’t scientific enough to say more than that.

The first ASM is a really tight film. And, it’s the second most I’ve seen a film in theaters (5 times, only surpassed by Spider-Verse).

The only reason I went w/ the significantly more flawed ASM2 instead is, I’m assuming from the premise that the entirety of every other film would have to go, & there’s too much in there that I couldn’t part with. The highs of that film are still the high water mark I’ll judge all future live action films by until I get a top-to-bottom great one, even if the lows are pretty dang rough.

I think it’s funny how much I thought I’d grow to love Homecoming in a post Spider-Verse world, but instead I’ve soured on it more & grown to appreciate SM2 so much more, lol.

The vanilla-ness of Watts’ Spidey sequences is just so tedious compared to the distinct flavors & personalities that Raimi, Webb, & Lord/Miller/etc. brought to their films. Which is particularly frustrating ‘cause the student stuff really shows Watts’ distinct comedic voice. Reminds me of that one director’s comments about Marvel Studios handling the action on Black Widow being why she passed (forget who it was). Which, doesn’t have to be the case (Ragnarok feels thoroughly Waititi, for example; Black Panther did suffer there some, but what Coogler did touch easily outweighed that).

    I just want some Spider-Man personality onscreen...lol.

How did it take a month of lockdown for me to go on another Spider-Man tirade, though, seriously.

I was just thinking the reason I didn’t pick an MCU film is largely because they just feel creatively stale to me and it’s such a bummer. I do like Watts’ comedic styling in the school and home scenes, but yeah the Spidey action is pretty dry. Maybe if they just paired Watts up with an action director and tag team it half and half lol.

Oh man, you & I both know Marvel Studios would never do that, lol.

They have their house style action infrastructure, & outside of a director having specific suggestions for those people (which Taika seemed to do; he at least was able to improv Korg’s weapon, & I bet he’s also why the bigger effects moments had some of the studio’s most memorable visuals)... it just is what it is. Makes me hope the ratio of action to non-action in Eternals isn’t enough to choke Chloé Zhao out of that film.

Imagine if a Spider-Man film pulled a Birds of Prey & brought in, like, Chad Stahelski.

I need to watch the ASM movies again now that I have them. But my picks are SM2, Spider-Verse, and Homecoming.

Anyone read the 'Hunted' arc of ASM from last year? I'm not sure how I feel about bringing kraven back for this

Those raimi movies are unwatchable now. Give me spider-verse and the two MCU movies.

I feel like the Lizard and Spidey suit designs were so distractingly bad in ASM that it paints that movie in a more negative light in my head than it should. ASM 1 and 2 might be a bit closer to each other otherwise. The story was definitely tighter in ASM.

I personally didn't, partly 'cause I find Nick Spencer annoying after his Cap run & partly 'cause I'm not a fan of Humberto Ramos. That being said, I think I remember some people online digging it, so if you like the creators involved, I'd say just go for it. Let go of comics' refusal to let anyone die, lol, & just read it on its own terms. *shrug*

Yeah Ramos is the reason why I skipped a big chunk of Runaways comics. Too distracting.

I like the ASM costume a lot. It's not as good as the classic, which ASM2 did a fantastic job of adapting (the best of any film's costume so far), but as a variant of the proper costume, it's pretty cool. As someone who's never seen the appeal of the Raimi costume (even after SM2 finally won me over), I still remember loving how the ASM one felt onscreen.

Lizard, though... meh, lol. Doesn't distract me as much as I'd think when I'm dialed into the film, but if I just look at the design, I really dislike it. I know that Sony's trying to not repeat characters right now, w/ all the rebooting & how deep Spidey's rogues gallery is, but between that & cutting Connors' family, I think they could get away w/ another take before too long. And, honestly, I'd be very into that appearing anywhere, not necessarily just in Spider-Man. Like, I know I've said this multiple times, but a McFarlane-inspired design would be a perfect addition to, like, a Venom film (or Morbius, but let's not allow Leto more than one film in the spotlight, lol).

Yeah putting it into perspective against the SM suit, I think I agree with you there. I was such a young kid when the Raimi films came out that I forget how "meh" that suit looks until I see it again. Still not a fan of the ASM suit, but I do love the idea behind trying to make it something a kid could have actually made, and having Peter improve upon it in later films.

Yeah I'd be more than happy to have a new version of Lizard. The Jekyl and Hyde dynamic between Conners and Lizard is so compelling to me compared to other Spidey villains.

Honestly, with how much Sony has been embracing these darker films focused on the villains and antiheroes, I wouldn't be mad about a Shed adaptation

Yeah. Like, I don't even care that much about Shed outside of thinking the art rules, but if you took elements of Shed & elements of Torment, along w/ some of that classic Lizard energy, & put it into a Venom film where Eddie gets pulled into it because he's doing a story on Doctor Connors... How cool would that be? Maybe even incorporate a bit of the current continuity into the ending, where the whole Connors family ends up being Lizard-ized but in their right minds. I mean, heck, could even tie into Morbius a little (but not enough to subject me to too much of that Leto creep).

Wouldn't surprise me if a hypothetical third Venom film just ended up going Planet of the Symbiotes or whatever, but like, why not play all these characters off each other? So much fun to play with, even w/out too much Spidey himself, w/out it being a stretch.

My take (which is probably bad), is that I'd keep Spider-Man 2, Into the Spider-Verse, and proooooooobably Far From Home because Mysterio has been one of my favorite SM villains since I was a kid. And I do like the Marvel Spider-Man films, although I agree that they suffer from elements that have been pointed out in this thread; if it weren't for Mysterio I'd've probably gone with Amazing Spider-Man 2 because there are aspects of that movie that I absolutely loved, despite it being kind of a wreck in other parts. This is reminding me that I haven't seen most of these films in years though. Probably due a rewatch.

Also, I've only got a couple more TPBs before Spider-Geddon and I've been looking forward to that. I'm not too familiar with a lot of the comics beyond the last five years or so of ASM and its tie-ins; any recommendations?

Finally: Does anyone else remember Spider-Man Cartoon Maker? I played the crap out of that for years.
