I’ve been vaguely aware of this band but never listened to them before today. I liked these singles so I listened to Brave Faces Everyone. I don’t know how I feel about this band. The music itself is great. I think the lyrical content is too much for me. It’s too depressing and doesn’t branch out to other subjects enough. I don’t know if I’m into them describing late stage capitalism in 26,000 different ways. It’s too real. Also, his quavering voice thing he does gets really tiring. There’s enough cool things this band is doing that I want to like them though
How dare a band be “too real”. It all honesty that’s why I love this band so much. They know what they do well and aren’t apologetic about it. One of the more relatable bands I’ve discovered in the last ten years. I’m loving the vibe of these new songs. Evolving yet retaining that classic SLS feel.
It's funny, the quivering voice and the devastingly depressing lyrics is part of what makes this band pop from the rest of them. Give me all of it.
I can see why someone might find Dylan's vocals a bit grating after a bit, I've seen other people say the same of Dan Campbell in TWY, even if I personally love them it gets a bit repetitive. But to say Brave Faces Everyone is wall-to-wall depressing lyrics is to ignore the entire arc of the album, there's a reason it's called "Optimism (As A Radical Life Choice)" lol
This is what I've been trying to say, they're not a jet-black 'everything is fucked' band in their ethos or lyrical outlook
Yeah, you’re right. I only listened to it once while driving and haven’t done a deep dive on the lyrics
Spanish Love Songs Release New Single, "Clean-Up Crew" “It feels like my entire life has been spent on the cusp of something,” says vocalist and guitarist Dylan Slocum. “I wanted to play baseball as a kid, and then I went to college and got hurt. I went to Hollywood to do film and TV and got pretty close. The band has gone beyond our wildest dreams, but at some point, you get tired of chasing after your dreams. The song is me taking a step back and asking, ‘Can we handle a small life? Could we give it up and move to the middle of nowhere and not worry about chasing some dream?’ To me, that’s death.”
I enjoy this band but their stuff has never had a lot of replay value for me (except for Losers 2). However, I can't stop listening to the two singles from No Joy. It's definitely got me actively excited for when it releases where as before it would've been more of a "yeah I'll check it out" type of situation.
"The song is me taking a step back and asking, ‘Can we handle a small life? Could we give it up and move to the middle of nowhere and not worry about chasing some dream?’ To me, that’s death.” Well that just made me more depressed than any of their songs, lol! Might be time for me to make some life changes.. Missed out on the limited vinyl PO when it originally went up but just snagged the indie exclusive from Rough Trade based on the strength of the latest single..
That's the one on the first listen of the album that made me realize they weren't fucking around. Still gets me.
Their ability describe late stage capitalism in 26,000 different ways is part of the main reason I like them
I have never added something to my cart as fast as I did with that ghost shirt they have for pre-order in their merch store
I truly can’t believe this is going to be as good as BFE, let alone better. But the singles have me HYPED.
