I like the gritty sound on Chamberlain and OTIP and the reverbed-out sound of RW a thousand times more than the overproduced sound of the last two records. I'm very hit or miss on the sonics of Will Yip records. I also feel that their more "bar-punk" sound suffers from overproduction in a way that pop punk doesn't, because I don't mind super pop-produced pop punk records. The last two Menz albums sound way too slick to my ears. I do like some songs on ATP also, but I do not connect with most of the songwriting on the record. Same with Hello Exile. I feel like they've fallen hard on songwriting tropes and it's getting tiring. Honestly though I talk about this too much. I'm just saying that this SLS record here is great!
my only complaint on this is that a handful of songs seem to have the same sounding intro which made the first listen or so feel like I left iTunes on Repeat Song. Other than that, these lyrics are killer and to be very hyperbolic but not completely wrong it feels like millennial Bruce Springsteen
The first album is almost as great as Schmaltz. Anyone who likes the band should check it out. It's really good.
Got my preorder last night, on first listen I thought Schmaltz was better, but once I got through this like 3 or 4 times, goodness, this is a superior album, so good.
just ordered the vinyl on Amoeba, and now its waitlist so hopefully got that sweet looking US Indie /300 variant
Yeah I'm going to pick up the indie tomorrow, I thought like most bands they would limit the tour press to a certain amount every night but they already ran out and the Euro tour isn't even over lol Indie variant is hot though!
Popping in here because I just heard of these guys for the first time yesterday. Am I correct that if I love the Menzingers I will probably dig these guys too? I listened to a few brief clips and they seemed great
I think the last album was pretty on the nose Menzingers. This one is definitely on the nose The Wonder Years
I’d agree this one leans more TWY (especially “Optimism” - that could be a lost song from between The Upsides and Suburbia), but any fan of The Menz or TWY will find something to like here.
I'm miffed that my pre-order won't be here til Monday, but at least I've got the digital version will tie me over until then.
