During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. Utilizing startling, innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben’s experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world.

This trailer purposefully includes captions (just like the film itself) so that hearing and non-hearing audiences can experience Ruben’s journey.

in theaters 11/20, prime video 12/4

This is really good. Puts you right in Ruben's frame of mind at all times, and Riz Ahmed is wonderful navigating the early pangs of going deaf while still clinging onto any shred of hope his hearing will materialize. People are calling this the perfect snapshot or something of the deaf experience, but i don't know if any of those people are deaf themselves (i obviously can't make that call myself either.) However I do really think this was given a great deal of honest treatment needed for a topic like this. Think a lot of people are likely to have this as one of their favorites for the year, with good reason

also appreciate the use of subtitles as well as the fact that they curb anything about ruben finding "a new community or" some shit

As a drummer with 24 years of experience with ongoing hearing problems - this is right up my alley.

PSA: wear earplugs, folks. Whether you play or attend shows in any capacity.

I’ve played so many shows with bands who’s members acted like it was a badge of honor to not wear earplugs. Enjoy not hearing shit, I guess?

This is definitely in my top 10 for the year. The sound editing and Riz Ahmed/Paul Raci's performance are fantastic. It's also great to see the deaf community represented as real people who value and appreciate their hearing loss, rather than quirky, comedic props or tragic people that look at Ahmed's character as a savior they need to help. I feel like it loses a little stem towards the end, but not enough to hinder my thoughts on the movie as a whole.
