Alright I just finished it. I enjoyed it, but there are some feelings I get from it thinking about it. I kind of wish we could get a Pixar movie just....living in that world, like the normal day to day? They showed they have the full capability to realize the world, I loved the sections in real life and in the neighborhood. I kind of wanted more of that, getting whisked into the soul plot is kind of like "alright this is neat and fun, but can we go back to real life?" I guess this sort of ties into the whole "BIPOC character gets turned into something that's not themselves for majority of movie", although I thought it was gonna be worse in that regard so there's that at least. I guess I'm at a point where I'm good with the whole "take a sort of vague societal construct and personify it" kick they've been going on, which Luca seems like might buck that trend? Now I'm just rambling, this was a good movie. And even great at times. I just see this movie as sort of more as a stepping stone to more things down the line I suppose.
Oh and 22 going off on their own and not meeting back up with Joe on Earth is great, I'm glad they did that. Would have been waaaaaaay too cheesy and cliche
Haven't seen this yet so carefully reading the reactions but just wanted to say that I felt the same way about Onward at times. Things just seemed to move quickly there to me. I hope it's not becoming a trend!
I agree that this was paced very quickly, but I’m really not sure what I’d have cut and it’s not like they were about to let this be any longer bc kids and 2+ hour movies do not mix. Even like an extra 15 minutes spread about could’ve done wonders though if runtime wasn’t a concern
Can we just get a short that’s 10 minutes of famous people trying to be 22’s mentors? Because I laughed hysterically at every single one of those.
Pacing was kind of quick especially during the beginning, but it didn’t bother me too much. I watched Inside Out last night and it felt much more comfortable by comparison, but those two movies definitely complement each other really well. Side note, I started dying laughing when Dez said “son”. It’s like a running joke that Donnell Rawlings says it in every other sentence so it’s kinda funny they let him throw one in.
The various animation styles were wild and not like anything I’ve seen before. Pete Doctor continues to really impress with how he can juxtapose life’s bigger questions into these films. Liked that this was more nuanced than Inside Out. Got a little jumpy towards then end and there appeared to be little rules about what could and could not happen but at the end of the day it’s a Disney movie, so it works.

Cars (I have not seen the Cars Sequels or The Good Dinosaur, and it sounds like they'd be a waste of time for me)
I don't think The Good Dinosaur is a waste of time. It feels oddly non-Pixar but it's still better than most of what Dreamworks puts out.
I enjoyed a lot about this, though I'm entirely sold on everything. I think the music is terrific, both jazz and celestial, the voice performances are solid (though tbh Tina Fey just didn't click as 22's voice for me, I felt like there could have been a more inspired casting choice there), the animation is incredible (especially with the lighting), and there are some effectively emotional moments. The only thing I didn't like, outside of Fey's casting, are the storyline cliches that Pixar is just so married to the second half of their filmography. It's the same reason I wasn't fully onboard with Coco and Onward either. Outside of that though, there's a lot of great stuff in this, and it does give me hope for what Pixar's got coming up.
