Now I need to watch MU again. And I still have yet to watch Ratatouille, Incredible 1 & 2, Cars 3, Finding Dory, and Onward.
not yet. Definitely will though, as all donations go towards The Actors Fund and they need it for sure. I’m sure it’ll be entertaining
Yeah. It was fun for a low budget, collaborative piece where no one was in the same space. One hour was about the right running time for it. I hope they’re able to do a full theatrical production when Broadway comes back. Also, Titus has talent, personality and charisma for days. There’s absolutely no reason he’s not in more stuff and James Corden is.
Finally watched this last night, & I both loved so much of it and had what I’d call “mixed thoughts” about it. As some whose favorite Pixar films by far are Up & Inside Out, I appreciate a lot of what Pete Docter did here & am very interested in whatever he does next, but I have one and a half criticisms with it. My main issue that I can’t shake is, Tina Fey 100% shouldn’t have played 22. Don’t know how much of this was fueled from seeing some black opinions beforehand, & how much I would’ve noticed anyways. But, spending the core of the movie with a white woman (especially Tina Fey) in a black man’s body really sours the story for me. (And, the small throwaway joke about her sounding like a white woman means we are supposed to understand 22 through that lens, even if she’s technically not at that moment a white character.) If you get rid of that one pointless joke & put a black person in that role, without changing anything else, it turns into a story with a strong generational/family element, which is already almost there, while losing what one could argue felt at time like fantasy blackface. It’s subtle if you’re not primed to notice it, but it was enough to more than once take me out of what otherwise would’ve fought Inside Out for my second favorite Pixar film. My significantly smaller nitpick is that I kinda wish the souls had more color & variety. (Which, I’m realizing that both of my complaints are wishing for more “color”?) Feels weird critiquing a visual component to one of the most visually creative American animated films in the past I dunno how long, lol, one that I would’ve killed to see in a theater. The Jerry design & whatnot ruled, & I loved the colors & energy & life of the irl stuff. But, all the light blue felt a hair too sterile for the soul/life thing they had going on. Would’ve liked more of a rainbow of souls, personally. To end on a positive note, the score ruled. Would be into Reznor & Ross doing more animated films.
Me and my 8 year old attempted to watch it last night and we both were incredibly bored, we sort of looked at each other when he jumped into the cats body, and we're like "this is rather boring". I really wanted to like it, this is truly one of the only Pixar movies to not pull me in, besides like the car sequels or monsters university.
Got around to watching this finally and it left me deeply conflicted. I think the message is life-affirming and the kind of thing we all need to hear these days. I just felt uncomfortable watching a black man "piloted" by a white woman. I liked the respect and portrayal of black spaces, but felt this was undermined by universalizing the "blackness" of the struggle. I didn't like that the Joe's character arc was essentially a magical negro trope. I genuinely felt moved by what I saw at the same time I was angered by it. In a lot of ways, this seemed like Pixar at its strongest and most tone-deaf simultaneously.
Like I said in my overly long post above, I think just replacing Tina Fey with a black person would’ve made a world of difference.
I agree with criticisms about the Tina Fey casting. The performance itself was good, but the larger context of her casting pulls down the overall message of the movie.
I re watched Girl With The Dragon Tattoo the other night, and was just amazed how versatile Reznor/Ross are. I definitely wanna spend more time with this soundtrack.
Wish I got to see this in the theater. I truly think seeing this at home impacted how I felt about it. It was solid but not Pixar amazing.
my daughter watches this every day and I’m still not tired of it. compared to my son who watched Cars over and over and over. I’ll take this lmao
Yeah I’m getting so worn down on a lot of Pixar/Disney movies my son is obsessed with. I tried to get him into this, and he liked it. Tho not as much as Cars/Monsters/Wreck It Ralph etc. Thoough I appreciate The Good Dinosaur a lot more now. He’s been on a dinosaur kick, and the movie is better than I remember.
