I randomly bought a record by him when I was like 13 and had gotten into digging in dusty dollar bins at record fairs, and it blew my mind when I heard it lol
such a fuckin rich discography... not to mention all the amazing stuff he recorded on/wrote for Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, etc. true legend
I don’t listen to enough Bobby Womack. Need to get back on that. Having a Stevie sesh these past couple of days. Sure, he has some cheese. But when he’s good, he’s untouchable.
I’ve only really started diving into him this week but so many gems there, highly recommended Stevie’s 5 album run is one of the best ever God level shit
It's more cheesy stuff that's overplayed that I can't get on with. Isn't She Lovely for example. Or Happy Birthday. If they come on, they're getting skipped haha
It's not my favorite Stevie song but I gotta give mad shouts to "Happy Birthday" for creating widespread awareness of the campaign to have the birthday of MLK become a national holiday in the United States
I've heard the chorus of that song so many times, I never knew the context. I should imagine 95% of people who hear the song don't know that either haha. Damn cool that he did that, though.
I only knew because I bought Hotter Than July on vinyl a few years back and there's a whole essay in the liner notes about the campaign, Stevie's role, etc. Very cool stuff
For those that don't know, there is this record label that specialised in putting out classic-sounding soul records. They have a compilation of some of their best tracks now.
RIP Art Neville. Having only properly got into old soul and funk in the past 6/12 months, I wasn't fully aware of he and The Meters impact on funk in the early days. Listening to them now and I didn't realise how much of his stuff I knew, whether it be through the songs in general or through sampling.
doesn't feel like modern soul gets discussed a ton around here but the durand jones album is so fucking good
Not sure if this has been posted in here since it came out, but Leon Bridges is back with the good shit.
This thread is pretty new so there hasn’t been much discussion at all. Modern soul is definitely at home here I’d say. Also in the R&B thread.
