Part of me that hates this, but I also realise games are probably the one thing I haven't bought in physical form for a long time, so maybe it makes sense.
This is the case for a lot of people, always found that weird because games are the one thing that are usually cheaper at release physical than digital if you shop around a little
Yep, and let's face it, games won't become cheaper now that there will only be one form of them. And now we won't own any of them in the future, they can yank them from their library and we're essentially looking at $70 rentals now. Companies will save money by not producing discs anymore, but the digital games won't get cheaper; I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they become more expensive. I can count on one hand the amount of games I've bought digitally; I've always been a physical disc gamer, and this really p*sses me off.
I would honestly love to see this blow up in their faces and crumble their company, but unfortunately it won't happen. So many people have gotten so lazy that they don't want to go out and buy anything anymore; they want to sit on their rear ends and click and buy and receive immediately. I'm honestly surprised they're motivated enough to get off their couches to go to their front porches and get the packages that aren't delivered instantaneously.
The ownership argument I’m less sold on because most games - Nintendo excluded - haven’t actually been playable off of just the discs for many years now, so who carse if you technically own the unplayable data on a disc
As sad as this is, there are plenty of companies that will release physical releases still. I can see these being licensed out as they are now with companies like Limited Run Games, the same goes for movies. There are plenty of companies that still put out physical release through licensing and to be honest do it better with more love and care than the majors.
