"Disconnection Notice" is a great Thurston Moore song. Really a strong example of his songwriting style as it had started to become refined rock music rather than experimental punk rock.

I was listening to their early period yesterday, Sister is so fucking good, the no wave groove elements add so much even with how toned down they are. and Bad Moon Rising is also good but every time I listen I just wish Steve Shelley was the drummer
heavily agreed, there's something to be said for the rest of the band getting weird and Steve always deciding to live in the groove. I personally always wanna dance to his drum work lol
"Schizophrenia" and "Pacific Coast Highway" are probably my standouts on sister, but there are so many great ones. imagine having a three album run like evol > sister > daydream nation lol
I have to find my old SY cds to replay.. been a long while.... daydream nation was always one I went to.
Someone help me out! I started listening to Sonic Youth a week or two ago and i loved certain of their songs right from the off. The first 10 minutes of Diamond Sea seemed like a perfect song.. a mix of Mogwai and, i dunno, Bruce Springsteen and Radiohead. But i rapidly ran out of these types of songs in their catalogue! Don't get me wrong,i can handle their screeching instrumental songs. The problem is I've already listened to plenty of that stuff (even if unfortunately what I've listened to in this genre was all stuff that SY themselves inspired) and I'm just over it right now. It's been years since i listened to Like Herod for one example and that's hardly in the same league as heaps of the tunes I've heard on the Sonic Youth albums i rapidly gathered together a fortnight ago... Songs I've liked are ones that are more chill, with a more ballad'y or even accoustic feel.. with good old American guitar licks and cool lyrics... I dunno how to describe these songs but i can list some of them.. incinerate, stones, the aforementioned first 10 minutes of Diamond Sea, pink stream, antenna is another one... It's not that i can't stomach their more punky, confronting stuff... I just wanna hear more songs like the ones I've mentioned. Any suggestions of more such tracks? Any particular album that has more of them than others? Cheers
yeah Thurston has moments that are borderline transcendent but I think if you look at their whole discography that Lee is a far more consistent songwriter. don't think there's a Lee song I don't like
