In its defense it was apparently the biggest opening weekend ever at the time with $50 million some. It held that record for 2 years until The Lost World: Jurassic Park beat it.
The Limp Bizkit joke got me, but then they played Pantera. I screamed. If they had played the warning music during the underwater moment I would have had a panic attack.
Just watched the first Sonic last night and absolutely loved it. It was definitely made for kids, but still a ton of fun and exceeded my expectations. How are people liking the second one compared to the first? Seems to have a lower audience score on RT
I think 2 is better. It focuses more on Sonic doing Sonic things with other Sonic characters vs Sonic being with a human the whole movie. I don’t count Robotnik as a human though haha! Minus a few human only sequences that weren’t really needed, the movie is a blast the whole way through. And stay for a mid credits scene. Hype city.
The wedding b plot in this feels so weirdly out of place but the joke with the priest was the funniest thing in the movie I saw this opening night with my daughter and wow kids still love Sonic. The post credits scene got such a huge reaction
Yeah I just got out of this with my son (he loved it) and I now understand why everyone was saying you could cut the whole wedding subplot out and wouldn’t lose anything. It really is like…completely airlifted in from some other movie entirely, although yeah I’ll forgive it for that priest joke and I also thought Natasha Rothwell was hilarious. The shot of her driving the cart wildly, swerving, stepping out casually in her wedding dress, and taking a drink while it smashes everything behind her was gif worthy. We also got a total Jean Ralphio moment when Sonic is talking to the dog and says “What do you want to do now? Whatever it is, we’re not watching Snow Dogs again because that movie is the wooOoOOooOoorst!” I loved the interactions between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the third act and the ending is so wholesome. I remember when the first Sonic movie was being advertised with just that initial poster of the original design and everyone thought we were about to get another garbage video game movie. Now here I am totally excited to take my son to see the third one because I genuinely like these. They’re fun and they know what they are and have somehow managed to inject sincerity and heart into Sonic the Hedgehog. As I sat in a room full of little kids it really made me smile during that mid-credits teaser when I could hear these excited little whispers allllll throughout the room, “Shadow”, “Shadow!”, “It’s Shadow!” The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Somehow, they did it.
It’s insane they managed to make these throw away movies into something people love. It makes me sad that after detective Pikachu we wont get a full on Pokémon movie
Netflix is actually reportedly making a live action film and series! https://screenrant.com/pokemon-movie-live-action-development-netflix-report-details/
Man, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen both. Gut reaction… Pikachu was better? Give that the edge due to it having a lot more to do with Pokémon where as the first Sonic was a buddy road trip with only Sonic. but I would say Sonic 2 was better than both. Even with the wedding stuff, it just leaned into the world of Sonic characters and adventures more.
Yeah it certainly goes: 1. Sonic 2 2. Detective Pikachu 3. Sonic 1 This was enjoyable enough for the most part but a little long in places. However, I used to daydream every day about what a sonic movie's climax would look like when I was 10 years old, so seeing that third act on the big screen was pretty cool
This was fun as hell, but what the fuck even was it? Definitely felt like two movies mashed into one. I give it a pass because a lot of the wedding stuff was hilarious. The Limp Bizkit joke was so damn prominent but fell completely flat for me.
I will say, I typically hate easter eggs and all the annoying shit shoehorned in but boy did I love most of the hat tips in this. The MEAN BEAN had me laughing so hard. Loved the SEGA Genesis manual for the robot. I popped hard for Super Sonic. Jim Carrey carried this whole thing on his back. My boy Adam Pally was criminally underused.
Deleted scene. I get why the cut it. Although, the Taylor Lautner joke was funny. But maybe they decided to have either it or the Limp Bizkit one. If so, they chose correctly.
I loved this. The relationship with Sonic and his family, and now friends, is so wholesome. The jokes in this kids movie actually don’t fall flat. The post credit scene has my hyped.
