God I love Ben Schwartz. Every time I see him do an interview lately I think I’d really like to see him and Andrew Garfield do a buddy movie where they just hang out and be delightful best friends and that’s all it is and it’d probably be my favorite movie of the year.
looks like this isn't doing so hot on the review sites. 44 on Meta. 59 on RT. Not a ton of reviews in yet tho.
this is a review proof franchise (not just the last movie but look at the games). I bet this does good numbers for paramount
They made fun of Limp Bizkit, so perfect 10 out of 10. End of review. just kidding, here are more random thoughts. Over all this was a fun romp. It largely focuses on Sonic with only a few sequences focusing on human characters. Which is good because a couple of human sequences fell pretty flat for me. They could have shortened a few of them and brought the movie in a little tighter. But whatever. Had quite a few genuine laugh moments. And in the cheesier humor moments the kids in the theater were laughing having a good time which just gave the theater a good vibe. the sucking of the air bubble bit was such a fun little reference to the games. If only they put in the warning music I would have stood up an applauded haha. for some reason I didn’t think we’d get super Sonic here. Right before it happened I was like “of course he’s going to go supersonic in a moment” and then he does. Super fun sequence. I guess I don’t have a to say. It’s a light hearted fun adventure with some fun action sequences. probably my one real quibble with the writing was the whole government trap that was set up. The plan relied on the sister falling in with the agent and built up enough of a relationship that would lead to a wedding ceremony in under a year (robotnik says he was trapped on the mushroom planet for 200 some days) to trap Sonic at a wedding that he was not invited to. It just doesn’t make any sense. Although when the priest opened the Bible to reveal a gun/taser it made me laugh. there is one mid credits scene then you’re safe to leave. Leaves you excited for the next movie unlike another recent release with mid credits scene that just plain “sucked” and took a “bite” out of any enjoyment of the film.
Also, knuckles never got his revenge on Tails for hitting him with the car. I wonder if they’re purposefully waiting until a later movie to make it more of a surprise.
The kids in the theater liked it. Feel like that’s all that matters since that’s who this is aimed at.
This seriously bothered me so much lol Also I was the only person in the theater who laughed at the Limp Bizkit joke. Probably because I was the only person in the theater who was alive when they were in their heyday.
I was talking to someone on Reddit about it and I ended up having more thoughts on it. I mean, having that many agents there and having 2 cages ready to go (which doesn’t make sense since they did not know about Tails) at an event that Sonic wasn’t supposed to be at really doesn’t make any sense. I enjoyed the movie, but the writers really didn’t think that sequence through. It comes across like they really wanted to sideline Sonic to give time to the sisters? I guess? I truly don’t understand it. It sort of creates tension, I guess, but it’s not really necessary when we already know the bad guys have the compass and our heroes don’t know where to go next. And oh yea, I laughed so hard at that because it was so unexpected to have a slam at Limp Bizkit in a Sonic movie in the year of our lord 2022 haha
It did. The blurbs say that Sonic is the second highest opening this year. The first was The Batman. Unless you're talking about something else I'm not understanding.
Maybe he means Carrey in Batman Forever? Edit: which at the time was the highest opening for a Carrey movie. I don’t feel like looking for to see when it was beat though.
