I mean, just based on the trailer it looks like they may have borrowed a lot, just from that description alone. Also, Disney has already used EU stuff to supplement new-canon content (Thrawn in Rebels) so it's not like they're totally against taking any ideas from the old EU.
I'm actually pretty excited for this. Alden Ehrenreich didn't seem too bad as Han. I like Emilia Clarke in general and it'll be interesting to see her in the SW universe. Don't even need to say anything about Donald Glover that hasn't been said, but MAN does he look good as Lando. Ready for him to steal the show.
I will also point out, re: the conversation yesterday about outright imitating another actor's performance/appearance, that Donald Glover looks/sounds absolutely nothing like Billy Dee and yet he's the part of this movie 100% of people are looking forward to most. So it really is more about the strength of the new actor than about whether they look and/or sound like the original actor.
Given the amazing reaction to Black Panther, and how excited people are about Glover, would have been great had Disney made a Star Wars movie with a POC lead. Hopefully soon!
I would argue that the sequel trilogy has three co-leads, two of whom are POC (and the third of whom is female). But yeah, one solely fronted by a POC lead is definitely something that has to happen.
I mean, the two main leads in Rogue 1 were female and hispanic, with the rest of the main cast primarily foreign as well (save for K2SO and whatever that main bad guys name was). I get the desire for a POC main lead but i'd say theyre doing a pretty good job so far of not white washing their new films.
Let's have a live-action Ahsoka movie and cast Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the lead. Also wasn't she supposed to be TLJ at some point?
Yeah I mean let's tell a actual side story of the Star Wars universe. How about a movie set during the fall of the Republic, in the wake of Order 66, where Idris Elba plays a Jedi master on a random planet that has to fight back against the reprogrammed clone troopers to save the planet's people? I don't know, just spitballing some ideas.
Or something that has nothing to do with any current Star Wars cannon would be nice. Keep the Force and all that, but get away from any previously known Star Wars stories. Now that I would be excited for.
Not quite sold on Alden yet, but everything else looks solid. Cinematography was the highlight for me. Score sounded great too.
Still need to start Game of Thrones. But this seems like something to be excited about. Surprising that it's for a new series of films and not the TV series they announced.
Wow another series separate from Johnson’s. I suppose they’re planning on ditching the one-offs after Solo, then.
Disney: we want to incorporate more diversity in the Star Wars universe both in front of and behind the camera! Force Awakens: JJ Abrams TLJ: Rian Johnson Episode IX: Colin Trevorrow JJ Abrams New Trilogy: Rian Johnson Solo: Lord & Miller Ron Howard New Trilogy: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Lol, shut up Disney
Rian's only directing the first movie and Benioff and Weiss are writing/producing. So, that that quote about direction could still be true. I hope at least.
I don't see why the diversity focus has to just be in the directors chair. Their are plenty of great women and POC writers out there too. I kind of want a story that's not written from the perspective of a old or middle aged white dude.
