December already has strong box office competition, though, so it's not like that'd be a safer release date. If they can get a teaser out for the Superbowl and a full trailer with Black Panther, and then a finished film by May, then they'll be fine. If it stumbles sooner, at this point, it'll also stumble later. At least a May release means, if this is Disney's first real Star Wars disappointment, they can have a year and a half to separate it from IX.
moving it to december at this point I think would be such a bad look. after all the director issues, and reshoots needed, the backlash they faced from re-casting, i would think what theyd want the most is to start hyping this and trying to get people excited for it, rather than admitting there are still issues and further delaying it.
The first trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp teases more shrinking superhero action comes out July 6th.
Mary Poppins though. Disney will be pushing that movie hard during the fall and it comes out on Xmas. Like @Tim said, a teaser during the SB and then a full trailer before Black Panther would be a good plan.
I mean, this thing is going to be a dumpster fire so likely they want to quietly drop it into theaters and hope everyone forgets about it.
I don't understand how we can say this about a movie we have seen literally nothing of so far. Sure, it's definitely had very obvious road blocks and setbacks, but calling it a dumpster fire this soon seems a bit much.
Because there's really only one reason why we haven't seen anything from it yet less than four months before it's set to premiere (it's bad). Plus, we know all of the details of its incredibly tortured and tumultuous production saga; for every Apocalypse Now that comes out of such chaos a great film, there are countless films that do not. Plus, a relatively smaller amount of studio meddling turned Rogue One into just a mediocre film; what is the level of meddling that occurred here going to do? I also didn't say it "is" a dumpster fire, because of course I don't know that it is, I said it's "going to be a dumpster fire." As in, I'm predicting it to be, you know.
fair points made, all signs so far do point to disappointment, but I think I'd still be willing to give benefit of the doubt until it's released but holy crap let us see SOMETHING.
They aren't holding it off because it's bad. They're holding off to give TLJ some breathing room. They did the same thing with Rogue One / TFA and a bunch of people were saying the same type of things. Surprise, I ended up loving it and my friend who I more recently got into Star Wars counts it as his favorite SW Film. Have fun with that prediction but I hope you won't mind if I predict you're off base here.
There was a year between those movies. Comparing their promotional periods is pointless. Plus, a ton of theaters have dropped TLJ now that the 4 week mandatory timeline has passed. Then holding back because it’s a shit pile is a distinct possibility. Do we know for sure? Of course not. But the fact that we are under 4 months and we have absolutely nothing yet. No poster. No promo shots. Nothing official. Just random tweets from Howard on set. That’s it. It should make everyone pause to consider what’s going on here.
also directed Inferno, In the Heart of the Sea, and the Dilemma, so he's not exactly the most consistent filmmaker in the world. Particularly in the last eight years.
Cocoon, Beautiful Mind, and Frost/Nixon are supposed to be great He might be the best director on paper by quite a bit to ever touch a Star Wars
Frost/Nixon and Apollo 13 are pretty good. But the lows are pretty low and the highs aren't exactly uniquely brilliant, untouchable masterpieces. And again, he's very hit or miss. As for best director to helm a Star Wars movie, Rian Johnson is young but easily would be my pick. I'd also say Lucas doesn't get enough credit for genuinely being a visionary filmmaker in the 70s. A New Hope, for that time, while not singularly his own accomplishment, is an incredible feat that came from him. Not him alone, but still. And yeah then the prequels undercut any legacy he might have as a great director, but that doesn't take away what he did in the 70s with American Graffiti, A New Hope, and THX 1138.
You can’t disagree on facts though. It’s fine if you have faith in the movie being good, that’s your opinion, but equating this delay to the Rogue One trailer delay is nonsense, the situations are completely different.
Yeah I have heard Graffiti and THX are great. Rian is young obviously, he hasnt had a chance to have much of a filmography. Thats why i said "on paper".
I don't believe it is though. I think it's very similar situations only this one seems worse since the movie is coming up soon. 4 months of promotion is fine, I'm not sure why anyone thinks a Star Wars movie would need more than that.
