Well, damn. I always thought Siamese Dream was mostly flat tuning just like Mellon Collie. I know that Today is in the key of Eb, but I guess they kept their shit in standard tuning and played on the 6th fret or whatever.

I think Hummer is Drop D, right?

It is along with Silverfuck. I believe Sweet, Sweet is slightly different as well.

I saw the Pumpkins play a few years ago in Indy at Bankers and they absolutely crushed. I was so impressed, such a good live band.

So I've never listened to anything past Machina II, and just did a discog run through to that point again, but should I explore further? Yes I realize this thread obviously will say yes, but figured I'd ask anyway. I really like Gish through Adore but both Machina albums lose me, a big reason being the horrendous production... should I explore more?

well, the horrendous production is only going to get worse, sorry

def give the zwan album a listen. after that, oceania. the only reason i listen to every pumpkins release is because they were my first favorite band, so i cut billy corgan a lot of slack that i don't really expect others to; regardless there is a distinct drop in quality between smashing pumpkins mk 1 and 2 that he's never really recovered from, much as i like some of the records and songs he's put out in that period

i loved thefutureembrace at the time, i should revisit it. zeitgeist is fun and underrated imo but its release was botched and the production yeesh. oceania would be on the level of the first pumpkins run if jimmy played on it, but it also might not exist if jimmy were still in the band, idk. monuments is like... half-amazing, half-whatever. shiny, cyr, and atum all have a ton of good songs on them but none are remotely consistent

    Good replies, appreciate it!

Oddly, Zwan was actually the first full Billy project I ever heard in full, I remember the single being on the radio and checked it out at that time before I ever dove into any Pumpkins albums

I agree, as far as albums go I'd recommend Zwan and Oceania.

But the rest of the albums have great songs scattered throughout:

Zeitgeist - United States and That's The Way My Love Is
Monuments to an Elegy - One and All
Shiny and Oh So Bright - Silvery Sometimes and With Sympathy
Cyr - The Colour of Love, Cyr, Anno Satana and Wyttch
Atum - That Which Animates the Spirit, Harmageddon, in Lieu of Failure, Moss and Beguiled

    Zwan
    Zeitgeist

    Are both very good.

Oceania, Monuments, Shiny are all worthwhile too
The solo albums OTHER THAN Future Embrace are decent

Cyr and Atum are bad bad

    In my opinion

But others like the non-guitar, synthy stuff more than I do

Cyr is the best pumpkins album post zeitgeist

Atum has quite a bit of non-synthy guitar songs.

Yeah, that's true, but most of them are bad. I liked maybe 4-5 songs out of 30+. Even when I split it up and listened to 9-10 songs at a time I found it to be a slog.

I do like it better than Cyr though

    Oh wow wasn't expecting that!

Wonder if they're going to find a new player or just stick with Billy and Iha for guitar duties.

People in r/smashingpumpkins were losing their mind over the weekend because someone noticed Jeff removed “Smashing Pumpkins” from his Instagram bio and everyone thought he left. Looks like their assumption was correct.

But I’m also curious about the guitar situation. I do think the Pumpkins sound great with three guitars, but I could also see it just being Billy and James moving forward. But I guess we’ll see next year

Do they really need a third guitarist when they have Iha and Corgan? Genuinely asking.
